NICU Moms - do you workout?

I just can't seem to find the time.  I know I *should* get up earlier and workout before work but I am not doing that now.  How have you either fit it in (and not felt guilty about time not spent with LO) or stopped feeling guilty about not working out?

I always took the stairs to the 4th floor in the NICU (several times a day).  That was all I figured I had time for, and it was quick and easy!

  • Ya.... I gave up work outs the day they told me they were taking her ASAP.

I also can't work out for 4-6 weeks, so we'll see where we are then.

I would not feel guilty. Your body is already in over drive trying to take care of you and LO. Let it rest a bit.

  • I was really looking forward to working out since I was on bedrest from 13 weeks on during my pregnancy, but I had to wait 6 wks post partum and then I just couldn't fit in the time or find the energy. Having a baby in the nicu and pumping is a lot of work and you definitely need your rest. I focused on getting myself somewhat back to healthy and normal and then when DD came home and we got into a routine I tried to fit in a workout. It's defintely not easy though.

  • Today was actually the first day I took DD on a mile walk. Once I'm back at work, I'm not sure when I'll find the time.

  • I never worked out when they were in the NICU. Between the pumping and the stress and the running to and from the hospital, I was burning up everything I was eating.

  • My LO has been home for a long time now, and when he turned 2 months, I signed up for gym, and at first, I woke up earlier before going to work, and worked out at the gym for an hour, but in time, I became more tired and tired... I stopped going, and now go on saturdays....

  • Thanks all!  I guess I'll cut myself some slack.  I am sooo looking forward to him getting home so that we can go on long walks - especially now that is starting to warm up.
  • No, but I haven't worked out religiously in a long time :-)

  • I was a long distance runner before DS was born, and with all the stress and pumping, I never really found the time or desire. When he came home, I signed up for the gym, but never went. This is the first time since he has been born almost 3 years ago that I am once again running on a regular basis. I have also signed up for a race which I hope continues to motivate me since it is a half marathon!
