Prenatal Fitness/Yoga classes near Columbia?

I am 21 weeks and am looking for a Yoga/fitness prenatal class near Columbia - preferably in the evenings and at a place that doesn't require me to "commit" since we are moving in July. I don't mind paying, I just can't make a long term commitment to a gym. Any ideas? I am getting tired of doing it in my living room! :)

  • I know there's a place in Columbia but I can't remember the name. Honestly, it's worth the drive into the city to go to Heather Brown's class at Charm City Yoga. You can do one month for $40 with unlimited classes.

  • There is a yoga center in Columbia: https://www.columbiayoga.com/ClassSchedule.html Looks like it is $16/class. I've heard mixed reviews of Columbia Yoga. But, like PP, I've heard very good reviews of Charm City, if you're willing to drive up there.

I took a prenatal yoga class @ Columbia Yoga off Rt. 100; I thought it was good.  I havent' heard of Charm City.  You could probably take almost any Level 1 yoga class though and it could be adapted for you.

  • And actually I'm moving to Columbia next week so you're welcome to carpool with me if you want to try it out.

  • I would be interested in hearing how it goes!! I am in Columbia as well and thinking that it might be a good way to loosen up the body :). Any insight to the class would be great! Thanks!

My friend told me about Columbia Yoga and said she liked it a lot. I was going to go, but I never got around to it.

  • I love my pregnancy yoga class. I haven't had any swelling or achiness (except when I sleep since I can only sleep on my side) and I think the yoga has really helped. And you're never too far along to go; there's women in my class that are fully active in class right up to 41 weeks! It absolutely amazes me.

  • Columbia Yoga is nice, but it's a 'boutique' yoga studio.  You're going to pay more no matter what, but the quality is higher.  You can get a package of classes, which is probably the way I would go since you're moving.  You can get like 10 classes, and get a discount that way.

Otherwise, there are tons of yoga classes offered through the Columbia Association gyms (there are 3).  You don't HAVE to be a member, and you don't HAVE to be a CA resident, but obviously, you'll pay a little more if you are.  There are 3 gyms, so it's nice that you can find a class offered at one of them near you.

We just joined CA, and I'm a yoga junkie myself, so I'm looking forward to trying them out.  Here's the link to the CA activity guide.

  • Wow... I just stumbled upon this thread, and what a big coincidence.  I'm 16 weeks along, and I've just taken my 3rd prenatal yoga class at the Yoga Center of Columbia.  I take the Saturday morning class (11:45-1:15pm); but there are also Thursday and Friday evening classes.  The instructor is really friendly. The classes, which are $16 each, are extremely relaxing and are really helping me to be constantly mindful of my breathing and posture- even with this growing belly.

I registered for the full Spring session, 12 classes, but I do believe you can attend any class as a "drop-in," by just paying the per-class fee.

    Good Luck!

  • I did this at Columbia Yoga a few times.  My best friend is still going.  I really liked it and it was nice that people were at all different stages of pregnancy.  I had never done yoga before and while I am still not a huge fan, it was fun for a bit.  You can do drop ins for $16

  • Thanks for the ideas. I wouldn't be opposed to getting downtown for a class, I actually work in Hunt Valley and live in Columbia. I looked at the charm city schedule and I dont know that I can get down there by 5:45. I might look into the one off rt 100 as well. I appreciate all the feedback!
