Toddlers: 24 Months+

s/o Games for your toddler

I bought Memory for DD recently, and I feel like she's still too young for an organized game. She likes playing with the cards, but she doesn't want to play by the rules (and I'm certainly not forcing that).

What about your DC? Is Memory just the wrong game? Should I try Chutes and Ladders or something else?

Re: s/o Games for your toddler

  • She might be a tad young still. My DS LOVES his memory matching Cars game, but really just got into it about 2 months ago. Right now it's all he wants to play and he's getting better and better at it. But at first it was hard to get him to take turns and understand the "strategy" involved.

Honestly, my DS wasn't into any of his games until, again, about 2 months ago. We got him a few (Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, Ladybug, Busytown, Zingo) for Christmas and his birthday and they sat there untouched for awhile. Then suddenly he was very into them and now that is all he wants to play. Before that it was puzzles and he couldn't get enough and now the puzzles are just sitting untouched. So it may be that she just isn't ready or interested enough in board games yet in general.

  • We don't play any games like that, except for Jenga occasionally, and that's really just a game of glorified blocks, the way DD plays. DD is pretty entertained by a lot of other activities around the house at this age, so I haven't felt compelled to look at Memory, etc. We were just in Argentina and I bought her a bunch of games that help with word recognition in Spanish, but I'm saving those for when she starts reading. Still a ways off...

  • we tried candyland at that age and it about killed me

I think Hungry Hungry Hippos would be safe :)

  • We just got Elefun and DD loves it.  I also found princess dominoes at five below and she loves matching up the princesses and setting them up to knock down.

  • So far we have tried candy land and hi ho cherio...both were big fat fails as far as playing the game goes!  She loved playing w/ the pieces tho!

I agree w/ pp that hungry hungry hippo is prob more my dd's speed but I can't bring myself to take on all those little balls, lol!

  • DS has a game from discovery toys that's called roll and play and he wants to play it constantly. It's VERY simple, and active. He likes it a lot. It's also great because it can be a one player game, I just sometimes have to read him the card but most of them he can figure out what to do from the pictures and will play it by himself, which is awesome if I am busy with the baby or something.

DS has and loves that, too! When we play he'll always hunt for the hide and seek card, though, and the game turns into that.

    I love Discovery Toys!
