XP: If you took procardia, how long before baby came?

I'm 34 weeks today, and will be stopping my procardia in 1-2 weeks.  I've been on 10mg every 6 hours since my 3 day L&D stay at 24 weeks for PTL/shortened cervix.  I'm on a pretty lenient modified house/bedrest, and they will be increasing my activity at the same time they stop the procardia.  FWIW - I missed a dose a few days ago and had a ton of contractions - took it, and within the hour things quieted down.  Other than this, I just have random BH.

My question is - if you took Procardia during pregnancy for PTL/contractions - how long after stopping it did you deliver? How far along were you? If baby wasn't full term - what complications/issues did baby face?

I know everyone is different - but so far the only 2 people I've heard from delivered 8-24 hrs after stopping Procardia, and I want baby girl to bake until 37/38 weeks (at least!).  Thank you - and hope its okay to ask this here, just trying to prepare myself.

  • I just want to say that you are doing so amazing.  I also went on procardia at 24 weeks for same thing (followed by 26 days of hospital bed rest and 10 days of home bedrest).  At 29 weeks, the procardia stopped working for me and my son entered the world.  I do not have an answer for you but wanted to congratulate you on making it this far!

What is their reasoning with stopping it? I delivered on procardia, so I'm not a good test case, but I would think they would keep you on it until 36w.

  • I also delivered on procardia...I started at 28 weeks and gave birth at 31 weeks.  I truely believe this is why...my dr said to wing myself off the procardia at 30 weeks by taking half the doses that week...I did ... she said if I feel contractions to take one...I did...then early Monday morning water broke and that was it...so I would say if procardia is working for you keep on it until 37 weeks.  Unless there is another issue?

  • I go to the OB tomorrow - I'll ask him then.  I know they said they stop it because there isn't any studies on its effectiveness past 36 weeks, and at that point they wouldn't stop labor in any other woman, so I guess to just let nature take it's course... at least thats what they said.  My SIL took her last dose and had her son 8 1/2 hours later... she has quick deliveries, though!  So I'm definitely going to ask what I can expect of a 36 weeker, too... I really want the highest chance we have of bringing LO home with us when we leave the hospital!!! I don't want to leave her there, AT ALL (of course, I understand nothing is perfect and even full timers end up in the NICU.. but I want her to have the best chance).
