Until today DD has been exclusively BF, with pumped bottles for when I'm at work. But lately my supply has gone down hill. It took me 3 seperate times yesterday to pump one 5 oz bottle, which DD didn't even get through last night. She needs at least 2 bottles while I'm at work and I don't want to keep pumping that much for that little amount because it's starting to actually hurt when I pump. Today I BF her and she was still hungry so I gave her a 2 oz bottle of formula and she was super happy and even spit up less. I did that twice and now I'm liking how it works for her (and me). My question though is do I need to do anything to get her used to this or just keep nursing her then top off with formula? I want to start BF her in the morning and then at night but will my supply dry up if I do this? I haven't been getting engorged since she was about 3 weeks old but will that be a problem now?
Re: ?'s for anyone who FF and BF
If you feed her formula, you do risk your supply decreasing. If you like giving her a bottle on occasion, you can pump in place of that. Remember, BM production is based on supply and demand. The less your baby demands, the less your supply will be. Also, know that you pump less than what your baby can take in... especially if your body is not used to a pump.
With the pump, it sounds like your horns don't fit you correctly. You may need a different size horn. Also, you might try some lanolin on your nips before you pump. It will help.
Your milk supply does not stabilize until 12-14 weeks pp.
If you supplement at each feeding, then yes your supply will never match her demand.
If I were you, I would give formula during the day when you are at work and then bf her in the morning and night with no supplementation. Your supply in the morning and night will meet her demand and you won't have to pump.
have you gone on a diet or anything? If you aren't eating enough calories then you may have an issue with supply.
I only say to give her formula if you don't want to pump anymore.
If you want to pump, then listen to the pp. Also, make sure the suction on the pump isn't that high, but just right.
