As the biggest couch potato ever, how would someone like me get into running? The past few weeks have been nothing but bad news from my Dr's. From my diabetes, to high cholesterol, to my eyes being so bad I can't wear contacts.... it's starting to hit me that I'm no spring chicken and I'm feeling like one foot is already in the grave as soon as I hit 35. I need to do something to get healthy. I have a treadmill (a very dusty treadmill) that I never use and I'm determined to do something to save myself. I have never enjoyed running but then again, the last time I ran was probably in 8th grade. How do I start? How to you keep up your motivation? How do you find the time?
Re: Question for runners
I started the couch to 5 k rnning program. If you have an ipod or an iphone there is even a handy application.

also other things you can do to be healthier/get moving: walks with the girls, zumba, dancing, hiking.
I don't love running, so I run 3 days a week and also hike and try to do other activitis that I DO love.
Finding time is the hard part. Especially since I dont feel comfy leaving the kids at the gym day care. I had to make the time and make a schedule with DH. I have a fitness goal, so far that is keeping me motivated

I haven't done it, but I have heard great things about the Couch to 5K program.
I have always been athletic and running just sort of seemed to be the thing I should do. But if you hate it, why not look for some other form of exercise. Start with walking, find neighbors or friends or your girls to do it with. Or find classes, Zumba, Jazzersize, etc.
As far as motivation, you just have to get in the mind frame that it is something you need to do for yourself, no excuses. After you start and do it for a few weeks, it won't hurt as bad and you may even start to enjoy it.
As far as time, you just have to make it. Get up early, before everyone and get a workout in, do it at nap time, after the kids are at school, etc.
Good luck and know we are here for support!!
I just started slowly. Walking around the block a few times. I started in intervals. The first few days for 30 minutes, 45 the next, etc. I agree with prior post. Get going with other activities you like. Like Kelly I am using the C25K, to get into running, however, my fitness goal is to become a runner and get in a few races.Your biggest support will be your girls! Definitely get them involved! Plus, you are teaching them good habits. I have a lot of friends who have really enjoyed Wii and Kinect games to get some exercise in too. I have yet to try these.
I'm diabetic as well and have managed to get my A1C drastically down by starting slowly, of course the diet, and drinking lots of water. Also, don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion and look into foods and supplements that help reduce and control your glucose levels.
If you want support from a fellow diabetic let me know on FB!
Good luck!
I don't run but I walk on the treadmill at the gym. I get incredibly bored so I read while I walk. I tried music but found myself just staring at the timer on the treadmill. I will say I've found it does take a lot of coordination and balance to walk and read at the same time. The last time I was at the gym I did a little over a mile in 20 mins.
Start out slow and work your way up.
Good Luck!!

I think you got a lot of great advice. I will just add that you have to remember the first five minutes are hard for everyone. It gets easier but never easy. You have to always run your own race, do your own thing, and try not to compare yourself to others.
Getting out there is the hardest part. Try to find some running friends, virtual or in person, to help motivate you and keep you accountable. The longer you wait, the more time you take off...the harder it gets. Start small...and have fun.
The Couch to 5k program is awesome. Have heard a lot of great things about it.
How do I find the time? I make the time. Ran this morning before the sun came up and before the husband left for work. Was runned, showered, and coffeed before the boys were up. Best way to start the day!
I hate running inside but love running outside. With the kind of weather we have here, it's perfect for running all year round. I'd just get out and start running slowly for a little bit, then build in walking, and make it enjoyable by doing it outside. I am a running addict, if I can't run for a single day I go crazy...
I run as part of my commute to work - 4 miles one way to BART and then back every day.
35 is not old - I am 40 now and getting faster running every year.
