Trouble TTC

Please tell me about your laparoscopy

Hi!  I'm a lurker coming out of hiding!  I think that all of you ladies are amazing and it's so wonderful to see the support that you offer one another.

DH and I have been TTC for over a year and a half...we were referred to a RE.  We went through all of the routine testing and everything came back normal with the exception of my HSG.  I have adhesions from a previous abdominal surgery, which is more than likely the reason we are having TTTC.  My RE suggested a lap.

If you had one, would you mind sharing your experience with me?  The whole idea of surgery and anesthesia freaks me out!   Thanks so much!!!

Re: Please tell me about your laparoscopy

  • I haven't had one, but I just wanted to say good luck and I hope that is all you need for treatment.

  • Mine was not bad at all.  I had my surgery at 9am and was home by 1pm.  I took the Percocet for the first day and then just took prescription motrin the rest of the time.  It basically felt like I just did 1000 sit-ups :)  It's pretty easy recovery and of course the procedure itself is nothing!

  • What sort of information are you looking for?  I have had 2 (1 cholecystectomy &  1 uterine septum removal)  Are they wanting to do a hysteroscopy too?

Yes, a hysteroscopy too.  I am just curious how the whole process was...recovery, outcome...

  • I just had my Lap done last week. Overall, it was not bad, and it's so worth it if they can clear your tubes.

I was not in terrible pain after the surgery, mostly just discomfort. But I definately did not expect to be in bed or the couch for 4-5 days recovering, so just make sure you leave yourself enough time to take it easy and rest. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

    Good luck!

  • I had a lap to diagnose endo.  I went into it thinking that recovery would be a breeze, but it was rough for me.  No one warned me about the gas that rises to your shoulder after the surgery.  That almost made me cry.  Make sure you have a stool softener and/or some Mylicon to help with things after the surgery.  I had mine on a Tuesday and it was Friday before I felt like I could comfortably shower without the risk of faceplanting.  By Sunday, I was feeling good enough to be on my feet for a decent length of time.  I was back to work on Monday.

  • The process was not bad at all.  Both Drs had me do a bowel prep, which is the worst part (if you have to do it).  Similar to pp, I went in 9am & out by 4pm.  But my surgery was pretty intense.  Recovery was a bit rougher for me, but I have issues with the right mix of anestesia.  I was on a pain killer, anti-inflamitory, anti-nausea and anti-infection.  After a few days I was able to move around a bit more on my own with the ute removal than the gallbladder removal.  Both recoveries were similar in every other aspect.  Lap from ute surgery gave me 1 "new" belly button and 1 scar on the side she found some endo.

    GL!  You will do great.

Oh yeah... the bowel prep!  That sucked a lot!!!  I had to be on a liquid for two days and I wanted to kill somebody by the end of it.  You never realize how much you miss food until you're stuck sucking down chicken broth and the hubs has a burger or something like that.

  • I just had one yesterday. Been in bed all day. The bowel prep was no fun and like the others, waking up from anesthsia is really the worst part. I thought I would be more bruised, but I am barely bruised at all. I have minor shoulder pain from the Co2 gas they put it, but it barely hurts. Overall, I feel much better than I thought I would. The incision in my belly button is probably what hurts the most now. Yay for vicodin!

I forgot to mention that a heating pad helps with the shoulder pain. My heating pad was my BFF last week!

  • I'm experiencing mad shoulder and upper body pains as we speak from the gas. OUCH..I'm glad I was told about it before so I could expect it. Otherwise, it feels like you are having a heart attack and I'm sure I would have taken my self back to the doc!
  • Thanks for all of the responses!  I really appreicate it.

Best of luck to all of you!  I hope all of us get our BFP's very soon!!!

  • I had a lap about 2 weeks ago. My Tips: I had a scopolamine patch put on before surgery to prevent anesthesia induced nausea, and that seemed to work well. I started taking senna and stool softeners after surgery to get things flowing again. I also had the gas pain in shoulder and under my diaphragm. Not moving much was helpful here as was the heating pad. My surgery was on a Friday, and I went back to work the following Wednesday. Finally, be sure to buy some nice stretchy yoga pants that are soft and comfortable to wear. I have been living in mine the past 2 weeks!
