Need help quick! Leaving in a bit for a meeting

What would you do in this situation?  Would you carpool to an off-site meeting with someone who is a smoker?  He most likely won't smoke with me in the car knowing that I'm pregnant, but can the lingering smell from early affect me or the baby?

The meeting is about 45 minutes away in a very busy part of town.  The meeting will be finishing around 6:30 p.m., so rush hour traffic will take us about 1hr to 1hr 15min to get back.  If I drive my own car, I'll have to deal with the hassle of finding parking, and the stress of driving home at rush hour traffic on the interstate (which is why I purposely found a job in the suburbs).

We are leaving in about 1 hr. Thanks!

  • Honestly, I don't think that the lingering smell will have any effect on your or the baby - you might just have to throw your clothes in the wash when you get home! I am assuming that your coworker would not smoke in the car with you and that if he or she does then you would say something...

I guess I would probably choose this option over having to deal with traffic, since it is a one-off. If you had to travel with a smoker every day, however I would probably look into other options!

    And roll your window down!

  • I don't know if the lingering smoke is harmful. For me I think the smell would make me sick mor than anything. I can't stand walking by someone outside that is smoking. My brother smokes and just the smell of his clothes makes me sick.

I would opt to take my own car just to be safe and have clean air in the car.

  • The smell from what he's smoked without you in there won't bother you or baby, other than it might make you nauseous. It's the actual smoke that will get you 2nd hand smoke, not just the lingering odor.....I'm pretty sure anyways. I would also not want to drive. He may not have a stinky car. Never know. Also, ask him not to smoke while you're driving. Some people just can't take a trip without lighting up.

  • Not to freak you out, but third hand smoke actually has been shown recently to have health risks as well.

  • If he's not going to smoke while you are in the car, then yes.

  • Thanks for the input ladies.  There's another gentleman coming with us to the meeting and he is carpooling with the guy.  The guy who is the smoker:  I've been working with him for about 3 years now, and I've only smelled smoke on him a few times (right when he comes in from outside).  Other than that, you wouldn't think he smoked.  So, since the two gentlemen are carpooling already, they wanted me to ride along with them.  I guess I'll just ride with them.  I'm rarely ever around smoke (and hold my breath if I pass someone smoking), so hopefully this situation will not be anything to worry about.

     Thanks again.

  • Hope everything ended up fine.

Third hand smoke (the lingering that gets into fabric and things like that) are very dangerous.  However, I don't think that an hour ride is going to cause any type of harm.
