Has anyone been summoned for jury duty while BFing?

I'm planning to call the courthouse to ask about accommodations for pumping, but I'm curious if anyone else has dealt with this, especially in MoCo. Ugh, what a pain.

  • I don't know about MD but in VA you can get out of it if you are bfding....what a pain!!

  • In my experience MoCo is excellent about rescheduling jury duty. A few years ago I called to reschedule jury duty since I was in grad school, and they let me select a date to return. I picked a Friday before a holiday weekend, since my guess was correct that no one would want to start a case that day and we were released early. Perhaps you could select a date far enough off that you may have wrapped up BFing?

  • I got called for jury duty 7 weeks postpartum and they excused me for two years. Call and ask them.

  • Also, I think there is info on Kellymom.com about bfing and jury duty.

  • I was so excited to be called for jury duty, but it was during my maternity leave.  I called the courthouse and they said they would excuse me for a full year and that if I was still breastfeeding when I am called next, that they would evaluate at that point, but that they might choose to postpone again.
  • Thanks everyone. I just called and got deferred until September. It was really easy.

  • gtown, will they call you for jury duty since you're an atty (in Va., it's an automatic exemption)?

I would love to do jury duty but always take the atty. exemption since it is highly unlikely I'll ever actually get to sit.

Interesting. I guess attorneys aren't automatically exempted in MD. They sent me a general info form a few weeks ago, which I had to send back, and it asked for my occupation.

I did not realize there was an automatic exemption in VA.  Maybe that's why I never get called.  I know that it is not an exemption or even an excuse in DC because I know of several people who have served on juries.

I'm glad that Mont. Co. was accommodating.  Pre-law school when I got called for federal jury duty and was in school, I found the court very easy to deal with in rescheduling.

  • So glad you were able to get a deferral. In DC, I was told there was no exemption for new moms if you weren't a full-time stay at home mom. The idea being that if you could pump at work, you could easily pump at the courthouse.

I was called for service when DS was about a year old. I was still pumping 2-3 times a day at that point so I asked for my service to be postponed for a couple of months when I would be pumping less. During jury selection I let them know I'd need at least one break a day for pumping. I got selected so I pumped in the nurse's station at the courthouse. It was fine, they had a private area and a fridge.

That is interesting!  The jury duty questionaire for Va. lists "licensed attorney" as one of the exemptions, which makes sense since I don't think many lawyers would want attorneys on their juries.  But if you make it through voire dire, let me know and maybe I'll give it a try next time my name comes up.
