Babies: 3 - 6 Months

babysitting, what would you charge?!

I babysit two great kids. One is 3, one is 5. I am currently babysitting 2-3 days a week for 11 hours the days I watch them. The 3 year old I have all day and the 5 year old I get him on the bus at 7:45 and pick him up from school at 11. So this summer I will have them all day. And in the fall he'll be at school all day but the couple is having another baby in October. The great thing is I get to have my baby boy (5 mo) with me. So on average I work about 119 hours a month. I get paid 500$ once a month and that is even if I work more or less because she's a nurse and schedule is always changing. SO  that is about 4.20 ish an hour. I know that is not very much esp for 2 kids. I also know I will need more watching them both all summer and a newborn in the fall. What is a reasonable price. Childcare around here is more than what I am getting. I love the family and I get along with the parents great but I am NEEDING to make more for my family. What would you charge? Thank  you:)

Re: babysitting, what would you charge?!

  • Home day cares around here charge $600-700 per month for full time care. I don't think that the number of hours should really matter from month to month -- you're being completely flexible to her schedule which counts for a lot. No regular day care could accommodate that, she'd have to enroll them full time to keep their spots.

  • I don't know how much this will help or not, but I just got done babysitting for a friend of mine (a 11  month old) and she paid me $25/day.  Worked out to $500/month.  I had her from 7:30am to 5:30pm M-F.

  • I can't tell you what I would charge, but I can tell you what I pay and what I get for that so you can see.

Two kids - both the same age, so there isn't weird scheduling things. I'm always home with the helper now, but when they get older she will watch them alone.

She does baby laundry, cleans bottles, plays with babies and vacuums the nursery and living room.

I pay her $15 an hour. She comes once a week for 4 hours to help out.

Wow. This is amazing to me. What I would charge is what I would when I was a nanny in grad school- $15/hr. I also pay $15/hr for my 4 month old. Granted, the cost of living in our two areas is probably vastly different. I would still charge AT LEAST $8/hour....especially since they're adding a third child to the mix.

  • yeah its hard because I know its not hourly but I just feel with two kids, and i come to them, pick him up so put all 3 kids and car seats in and out of the car when I come. I am very flexible, NEVER LATE, and only times weve called off is due to sick kids or horrible weather. Plus its 2 kids, soon to be one all day, a newborn all day, and 5 year old for 3 hours. I am just not sure. I want to be fair but I just need more. so now I am charging i guess it would be around 35 a day for the two. but then adding him all day and a newborn in the fall. AHHHH so crazy

  • for this area they probably would have to do ft for a daycare and it would be around 800 ish I am assuming for 2 kids, soon addng a infant. Plus I make meals, sometimes do dishes. Make sure they get naps, while getting my lo to nap. I am thankful for the work to help my hubby. But I wish I could charge 15 an hour haha id be rich. but that is not likely haha

  • Minimum wage is $7.25.  I kind of feel like for two, soon to be three kids, you should get paid at least that.  That's $862.75, which for three kids is great.  I pay more than that a month for one kid (FWIW I pay $225/wk), granted it's full time.  But the family is still getting a great deal with you watching the kids.

  • I used to babysit, when I started they only had 1 child who was 6 months old, I got $25 a day (8 hours) then they had another so I got another $25 each day - so $50/day for 2 kids.  I also went to their house which I think is a big deal since the kids were never out of bed when I got there, so I got them dressed and fed - which mad her life much easier.

  • I also get them dressed and ready to go. Make sure he never misses the bus, which in 4 mo he has not since I started watching them. so that would be 50 a day so about around 650 a month and then if they added another it would be around 975!  I dont think I could ever get that much. i am sure thats have her months pay. I just dont know. I will just talk to her but I feel 500 is too little esp after 4 mo and she says i am her fav babysitter and the kids never have any complaints which is the first time they have loved their sitter

It sounds like you do alot for their family and they are lucky to have you!  Maybe think of a number, like $25/day for the first child, then $20 for the 2nd and $15 for the 3rd.  So it sounds like they are getting a good deal.  I also got paid weekly for however many day I worked that week.

  • We have a Babysitter for LO on Tues/Thurs. She watches LO for 16 hours a week a we pay her $600 a month. That's about $8.80 an hour. I asked a friend who is a Nanny in Indiana if that was a fair wage, and she said yes, that's pretty close to what she makes. I live in Greensboro, NC if that helps (sometimes location dictates cost). BUT keep in mind that you get to have your LO with you, so what you aren't making in salary, you are saving in your own cost of daycare...not sure if it's even though, you may want to look into that.

    HTH!

  • yeah I love I get to have lo with me. He ebf and will not take a bottle or paci no matter what, weve tried everything so he has to be with me. I love that and appreciate it but I found one lady to watch him 25 a day. so that is the least amoung I have found for daycare. But also I know lots of crazy things about daycares that are possible and if they had a nanny cam on me they would be very pleased so I am trustworthy and they love me and I love the kids. They are great with the baby too. I also take the dog out and walk him to pee all the time. Just so much comes into play. gah

  • It's going to be different everywhere.  Here FT care is roughly $1,000/mo for one kid and babysitters charge $10/hr plus an additional $2/hr for each extra kid.
