We had Collin's 6 month checkup today and he said to go ahead and start with Rice Cereal. We've been EBF until now.
I've been reading that you don't HAVE to give them cereal first and I'm wondering if you did? If not, what did you feed your baby 1st?
Since I'm home I want to make his food instead of buying the jarred foods, so if I don't have to buy the boxed rice cereal that would be nice.
Re: Baby Food - What did they eat first?
We did rice cereal (I bought the box) but we also did it early - almost 4 months old.
At about 5.5/6mo I started on veggies. I think I did peas first, then sweet potatoes and butternut squash. I made all of the veggies/fruits. I tried giving him a jar of chicken once and he wouldn't eat it, so we just held off on meats until he could eat the larger chunks.
Avocado is an excellent first food.

We skipped rice cereal - my pedi admitted it's nutritionally pointless. I did make some of my own from brown rice later on to try to thicken some of his fruit purees, but he didn't like it.
We started with avocado. The website mentioned above is good, as is the book Cooking for Baby
Our pedi suggested starting with mild flavored veggies first. So we started with the yellows, oranges and then greens. Then moved on to fruits. I used this site all the time. It's extremely helpful.

We didn't bother with rice cereal. I buy her purees because I've been too lazy to cook, but she doesn't much like purees... we only use them when we're cooking something for ourselves we don't want her to eat.
I think the first thing she actually ate was sweet potato. Although the first thing I gave her to try was a banana. Yes, a whole banana.
We skipped cereal all together for a variety of reasons. We started her on solids with avocados first. I did all vegetables and then after about 4-5 weeks started with some fruit. I think we did avocados, then zucchini, then green beans and I can't remember after that.
I made her baby food as well until we got to meats...I could not bring myself to puree meat. Blech!
For months the only food Evan would eat was sweet potatoes. There was a random week where he would eat avacado, but that was short lived. He is now starting to branch out and eat more things.
I didn't have time to make my own baby food, but he loves Plum Organics. They are in a pouch instead of a jar, and now he will feed himself the Plum Organics for Tots since there is no spoon involved.

18 cycles (3 with our RE) - Metformin + Clomid + HCG booster did the trick!

Thank you for the website! Great stuff and lots of information.
We went ahead with avacado - he was ... eh, less than thrilled about it, haha. We'll see what happens the next few days. :-)

Well, it depends... is Collin showing interest in eating anything other than EBM?
Cues that he is ready and interested would be hands to the mouth while you eat, opening and closing his mouth while he watches you eat, reaching for your food and then attempting to put it in his mouth, etc..
There is no magic number for starting solids and, if he isn't showing cues he is ready, there is really no reason to force it if he is happily EBF.
In fact, studies suggest that delayed introductions to solids decreases the chance of developing food allergies and intolerances.
We didn't do the cereals until we had introduced veggies, around 9/10 months. Early cereals are suspected in some of the gluten and rice intolerance's that are plaguing western culture. If you do decide to introduce them, try an organic bb cereal, JMHO.
Another idea that someone else said, is try avocado. I love the wholesome baby food site, as well as this one: https://www.simplybabyfoodrecipes.net/ and this whole-family-friendly one: https://weelicious.com/
