actually, you don't *need* a "bulkier weight" - you can use a lighter weight if you want, they just wont be as warm so better for warmer months. also, there aredifferent types of "bulky" - like gaia or bfl and both work fine, it just depends on your preference. bfl is myhands down favorite kind of yarn because itis very soft. targhee is pretty bulky too but it is a little rougher.
alot of the longies and shorties out there listed asaran - this is basically a generic term for midweight. worsted is a little lighter and bulky is heavier. you mention "abreviations" - the only abreviations i see used regularly are mmr, mmw, and bfl. they mean mountain meadow worsted, mountain meadow rambioulette and blue faced lancaister.

Thanks! I get so caught up in the BFL, Gaia, Stallion jargon, etc. I really should just learn how to check by stitch gauge. The last longies I made for DS ended up fitting like leggings. lol
