Birthday party ideas

I'm trying to plan my son's birthday party and working on locations and ideas. At the moment I'm totally clueless and don't want to spend a lot of money. We were thinking of just going to the park, but not sure what entertainment to provide for the kids other than the swing set. (most kids will be ages 1-3.5, there will be a lot more family than kids) Can I get a bounce house at a park? Anyone else had a birthday party recently at a park?

Thanks!

Re: Birthday party ideas

  • Depends on what park.  Some require deposit and rental of gazebos/tables.  I drove past a cute little park this weekend in Webster, close to where I live and saw a bounce house and tables with balloons etc.  Not sure if the city where you are would be okay with that so you might want to look it up.  But really a bounce house and play equipment should be plenty for a birthday party for kids of that age.

  • I used to live across the street from a city of Houston park and they had bounce houses there all the time - no idea if it was "allowed", but no one seemed to have any problems with it. To me, the biggest drawback of most parks is the lack of bathrooms. That's why we didn't use the park by our house. But I see people having parties at bathroomless parks all the time, so maybe that's just me.

A playground and cake is probably enough entertainment for the 3 and under set. We had DD's 2nd birthday at Bane Park which has a little tiny splashpad. We drove to the park with the drinks cooler and some stuff at 9am when it opened and got my SS to sit there to claim our spot. It's not a big super busy park though and I don't think anyone else even looked at our spot until it was almost party time (10am). We grilled hotdogs. It was cheap, but a pain because there was a TON of stuff to haul back and forth.

  • If you can do it at the park I'd get a toddler moonwalk. Thats what I'm getting for my son's bday. Try www.kingkongpartyrentals.com They have good deals and packages.
  • You could always do a storytime for the kids.  If the ages are 1yr-3.5yrs you can have someone do the storytime and while storytime is going on have someone hide eggs for a bug hunt when they are done with the storytime.  Get Easter eggs and fill them with fun stuff and put bug stickers on the egg. Your theme could be Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar".

I am a Librarian at The Bellaire City Library and I have been going to Birthday Parties lately to do storytimes for kids parties. It has been a huge success.  I have loads of ideas if you want to email me I can suggest more. MissyDixon@hotmail.com

Just an Idea it is low cost and Easy educational entertainment.
