Toys for learning to walk?

Apparently my nieces loved learning to walk by pushing wheeled toys around... like a kiddie shopping cart, but one that moves slowly.  I've also heard of kids learning by pushing a diaper box around, but we don't do sposies, so I'm looking for something commercially available.  :)

Did anyone use something like that?  DS's favorite position is on his feet, and you can tell he's rarin' to get places that way.

Re: Toys for learning to walk?

  • We borrowed a grocery cart and he LOVED it - it's totally what got him walking so early. Plus if you buy one he will still love to use it carry stuff around and especially when they get to the "play food" stage (around 16mo). I wish we still had it...
  • Loading the player...
  • We have several different toys like this..

Hudson got a shopping cart for Christmas that he loves pushing around (it's the cozy coupe cart, so the base is more stable than some of the others).

We also have a ride on toy that has a handle on the back to push it which he often uses as well as one that can be converted from standing up to walk to ride- on (I think it's Playskool).

But..his favorite thing to push around seems to be the kitchen chairs .. LOL

  • My son loved pushing a laundry basket around. It was a bonus that he could put stuff inside and push his stuff around too.

My initial vision was a "borrowed" cart from the grocery store, that gets dumped on the side of a house or in a ditch. I'm glad you meant a kiddo cart Big Smile

B - Gaby is borrowing our Playskool Walk n Ride and likes to push that around. I've heard it's good for when they're older because they can stash stuff in the seat.

  • We have this:

(Sorry it's not clicky, I'm on a Mac)

At first we just had the music part on the ground.  Then we skipped "step 2" and went right to "step 3" because she started pulling up to stand pretty much right when she started crawling.  The wheels have a lock so they can learn to pull up and stand, and then when ready to start moving you can unlock them.  We love it.

  • DD walked early but we don't have any walking toys - we didn't want our furniture and walls to not take that hit.  I know we're those people but our house is only a year old -  our backs took the pain instead by holding her hands. I guess my point is you don't have to have them - sure they're nice but DD took steps at 9 mos and was fully walking by 11 w/out them. DS was later - 11 months - 14 months but we didn't use any walking toys. If you don't care about your walls and furniture - shopping carts or this Playskool car/cart thing was popular among friends and then Fisher Price has some push/ride on cars that tend to be a hit.

  • Emma got this from my IL's and she actually pushed it around sometimes, but it was also good for helping her to move her way around the table.

And then she had this too:

  • Thanks all for the recommendations.

After doing more research, it seems like most of the products out there have 2 problems:  they either are not stable enough for a child to pull themselves up on, or they move too fast on hardwood floors.  It seems the answer is rubberized wheels and a slowing mechanism on the wheels... and those ones cost $50+.

I may be exploring the laundry basket or hand-holding.  :)
