Could she be hurt?

I don't know what is wrong with Lila today.  She's been fussy all day, but not like her usual colicky "I want you to hold me all day" cry.  It's just this pitiful little cry.  I don't know how to explain it, but you know how you know when something is off.  She just wants to be held and cuddled and that's pretty much what I've been doing all day.  Anyway- I'm wondering if it has something to do with Charlotte hurting her.  This morning I had Lila laying in the middle of the floor and we were all playing.  I was there to supervise, but turned my attention to Ava for just a minute (I was still right there in the room) and then Lila shreiked and I turned around and Charlotte jumped back.  She had stood on top of her.  Could this have seriously hurt her?  I picked her up and she stopped crying right away so I didn't think much of it, but she's just been clingy and crying all day (and her colic had actually been improving with a little gripe water over the past few days).

Re: Could she be hurt?

  • I'd definitely take her to the doctor. She could have broken a rib when she stepped on Lila. Especially if she's still whimpering. Honestly, I'm a first time mom so I worry about everything and probably wouldn't have waited this long. But thats just me.

  • Hmmm...I would definitely put in a call to the pedi, possibly even the pedi after hours line. I'm not normally an alarmist or someone who gets worried easily but its just concerning that its a different cry and its been all day and you KNOW something happened (just not what exactly that was). With a baby her age I would be worried that something could have broken and you would have know way of knowing. GL and keep us updated!

  • I would definitely call! Better safe than sorry, I'm sure the pedi would be happy to talk to you and see Lila. Like others said, it could be a rib or something else internally.

  • Just wanted to update... I called the nurse line at our pedi's office and they didn't sound worried about it.  I explained what happened and they asked if it was more like she was stomping on her, which she wasn't, but rather she had stepped up on her with one foot and put weight on her.  She said it's highly unlikely that she was injured because she's pretty much "rubber" at this point, but to look for increased fussiness, lack of appetite (definitely no problem there) and bruising (there is none).  I told her the only thing that concerned me is her fussiness but she's been colicky lately anyway, so it's hard to tell the difference, but that her cry today has been a little more wimperish.  She said it would be more of a high pitched screaming, which it isn't and it hasn't been constant either.  She nursed just fine and is sleeping fine, so I guess if she were hurting she wouldn't be able to sleep.  Even though the nurse didn't seem too worried, I still can't help but be.  She said I could take her to the hospital for peace of mind if I wanted, but didn't really act like I needed to- so what would you do based on the phone call with the nurse and her symptoms?

  • Based on what the nurse said, I'd probably wait and see how she is tomorrow.  If she still seems off, then I'd probably call again and see what they think (but still probably not take her to the hospital unless they encouraged it).  I tend to err on the side of NOT doing anything, though, so take that into consideration.  If the nurse didn't seem overly concerned, I'd probably go with that.

  • I think that since she doesn't have any of the symptoms (not eating, bruising, etc) and the nurse isn't too concerned, you shouldn't worry. If she continues to whimper and isn't acting like herself then I would definitely take her to the hospital for peace of mind.

  • I would check on her overnight and def do the ER if anything changes.  If she is still acting the same in the morning, I would make an appt with the pedi.  But I tend to err on the side of caution.

  • I saw your page in my post above.  Tell me, how hard did she step on her?  was it full body weight, and where were A's feet in relation to her body?  Is she still in distress, or can she sleep?  Did you give Tylenol?  What were the results of that?  I am happy to try to give you some advice.  I think you are ok until morning, but the answers you give might sway my advice otherwise.

  • Is she sensitive to your touch where Charlotte stepped on her? I'd get her clothes off and push all around her torso with two fingers and see if she reacts or cries.

If she seems fine, I'd wait it out to see if she has any symptoms the pedi mentioned.

Sorry I'm just getting back to you so late- had some trouble getting the big girls to bed tonight.  Anyhow, thank you for taking the time to respond.

Charlotte stepped on her belly and it all happened so quick and she jumped back so fast (once she realized what she had done) that it was hard to tell where exactly she stepped.  I should clarify that she didn't really stand on her like she was doing it to hurt her, she just didn't think about it- but it looked to me like she just put one foot on her, stepped up and put weight on that foot, Lila cried and then she jumped back.  Again, it happened very quickly and I only saw it happen out of my periphereal vision, but this is what it looked like to me.  When Charlotte jumped back, I picked her up right away and she didn't continue to cry.  I never gave her any Tylenol.  Althoug she was fussy today, she did take an okay nap and is sleeping well tonight and has continued to eat well all day.  She was also content when we went out on a walk before bath/bedtime this evening.  I've been checking on her all night and she seems to be sleeping comfortably.

  • I missed your reply post earlier.  I say let her sleep it out.  You are most likely in the all clear.  It sounds like she is comfy if she can sleep well.  Just keep an eye on her and go in to see the doc if your gut says you should.  If she is sleeping, chances are that she is just fine.
