Adjusting to pre-school's bathroom breaks

Reading a post below about certain schools making sure the kids can go to the bathroom all by themselves got me me thinking. During the first few days of school the kids are getting used to "potty breaks" will the teachers take them if they say, "I have to go potty" in between the breaks? I'm sure DS will be able to control himself but we are working on him going ALL by himself and then being able to hold it or go when there are bathroom breaks.

How did your LO adjust?

Re: Adjusting to pre-school's bathroom breaks

  • Where both my kids are in school, the kids can go anytime, not just at the planned potty times.  The planned times are just set times that all the kids go as a group with the teachers.  In my 3 year olds room, the bathroom is in the classroom and they have the door open all the time so the kids go in at anytime that they need and the teachers can see them.  In my 4 year olds room, the bathroom is across the hall - the first week or 2 of school, the teacher would go with them since they were going across the hall but since then, they go on their own - they just need to tell the teacher first.  The whole class does walk down to the main bathroom a few times a day as a group since the bathroom near them is just one potty.

  • Thanks for the response, I will ask during our open house in August and see what the school's situation is.

  • We are in a special pre-k program and Harm was not trained when he started.  Our teacher and her assistants were just GREAT about helping me.  I used to text them when his potty watch would go off and they would take him.  Now he has 3 scheduled potty breaks during class time (arrival, 1 and 1/2 hrs in, and right before it is time to leave) and he does well with it.  Today he even had an accident (his first at school) and they were just fabulous letting him know it was okay.

I guess really does depends on the program and teacher.  Our experience has been good.  I can't say enough good things though about those great ladies.

  • DS#1 goes to preschool, and they tell them that if they have to go just to ask the teacher, and she'll take them.  They don't have  group potty breaks, because not everybody has to go at the same time.

He adjusted just fine, cause it's like he's at home. Except he has to ask to be taken.

  • My ds is in a mixed 3/4/5 classroom. The bathroom is in the hall and they are able to leave to use it whenever they need. With the younger 3 year olds, the teachers will also take them at set intervals.  The only accident we had was while he had outdoor play time.  I don't think he knew enough to ask a teacher to go back inside to use the potty, or maybe he was just playing too much :)

  • Speaking as a preschool teacher (in a class with 3/4 year olds), there are certain times everyone at least tries to go:  before going outside, before going on a long walk, before nap, after getting up from nap, before going outside (pm time).  If a child needs to go on their own, most of them ask, but we tell them they can just go.  That being said, we have a bathroom in our room, so they aren't leaving our care at their will.

He's the single greatest thing I've done in my life and reminds me daily of how fun (and funny) life can be.  He's turned out pretty swell for having such a heartless and evil mother.
