Both my boys chewed the crib rail, just for the few weeks they were the perfect height to stand and chew. Once they were taller it wasn't an issue. I went through about 3 packs of the rail covers with M, he would just pull it off and chew the rail, lol. I didn't bother with it for W.

We have the same one from amazon in blue, it works great! The top is fleece but the under side is waterproof so when he chews on it the wetness doesn't make it to the crib wood. Like Gina said it washes nicely.
I'm going to disagree with everyone and say put them on BEFORE they start chewing. Hudson has always been one to put everything in his mouth and as soon as he could stand he chewed the rails. The crib looks HORRIBLE .. and it was an expensive crib we were planning on converting to a bed, so now we'll have to refinish it when that time comes I finally got a gummy cover on it, just so he won't chew it any worse than he already has .. he still chews on it, but now he's not ruining it (except on the side where there is no cover .. some how he still found that spot .. grr..

I would wait and see if you need them. We had the gummy covers and DS pulled them right off, we ended up with these

they work very well and wash up nicely.
