Baby Names

Do you know an Evangeline?

So DH doesn't know it yet, but this is our daughter's name (he wants to wait til we see her; I think I can convince him that she looks like an Evangeline).

I'm pretty set on it in general, but I had some questions for those of you who know/have an Evangeline, or have seriously considered it.

1. How was it pronounced?

Seems like a dumb question, but the first person I met with this name pronounced it --lyn instead of --leen. Because DH doesn't care for many --leen/line names (though he loves the meaning of this one, and he thinks it's pretty), I've been considering the --lyn pronunciation.

2. Did/would she go by her full name, or a nickname?

I fully intend to insist on people calling her by her full name until she's old enough to decide what she wants to be called. Having grown up as a "just Allie, not Allison---A-L-L-I-E," the thought of correcting people on what to call my daughter really doesn't phase me at all. I do think that, while the name is pretty long, it doesn't have any really obvious nicknames; I do like Evy/Evie, but that's not necessarily intuitive from the name.

3. If she went by a nickname, what was it?

TIA!

ETA: 4. Whoops. And if you know it, what was her middle name?

I'm having the darndest time coming up with a middle name, but I hate middle name posts, so I didn't want to ask for suggestions. Our last name is very short, so I feel like one-syllable names are abrupt with it, but anything longer is a mouthful. So I'm just curious what Evangelines' middle names are.

  • I do. Her name is Evangeline Lily. Most people pronounce it with the -lyn ending, but her grandparents say -line. She goes by Angel  or Ang for the most part.

I actually think Evangeline Lily flows gorgeously, but that's the name of the actress from Lost....

  • The only Evangeline I know of is a costume shop.  It's pronounced with the -leen ending.  I actually LOVE the name, and think it pairs well with Faye as a MN.

Nobody around here shortens the name of the shop despite its long name.  Are you looking for a NN or would you prefer to use her whole name?

I plan on using the whole name. I'm not a big fan of NNs in general.

I didn't know that. She's a 3 year old from my home town. Maybe her parents watched Lost, but I don't know. I never would have made that connection on my own. Weird.

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE this name and I am so sad DH wouldn't get on board. I fell in love with it a long time ago after reading Uncle Tom's Cabin. IMO there is not a better literary character that you would want to name your daughter after.  I have never met anyone with the name....

For a middle name I would have chosen

    Jane or Lee

  • I only know of Evangeline Lilly, the actress on Lost. I pronounce it Ee-van-juh-leen. I would choose a simple mn like Anna, Ruth, May, June, Jane... anything but Lily lol... you wouldn't want people to ask if you're a big Lost fan all your life. ;)

I read a blog and one of the author's daughters is named Evangeline.  As far as I can tell they always use the first name and since I only ready it I am not certain on how they pronounce it.  When I read it in my head I say -leen.

  • Evangeline is a family name for DH.  There are about 5 of them.  They all pronounce it -leen.  They all go by different nicknames, one is Eve, her daughter is Evie, one goes by Angie, one by Evalyn, and one insists on being Evangeline Marie.  3 of them are Evangeline Marie's and 2 are Evangeline Rose's.

    Hope this helps!

I love the name Evangeline.. I would pronounce it with Lyn and like that pronunciation better.. the only Evangeline I have heard of is the actress from lost which pp have mentioned I think Evangeline Lily is beautiful and although that is her name I wouldn't worry about that too  much!

  • Yes I do. She is only 6 months old and her parents pronounce it with the -leen. Her middle name is Clair and everyone calls her Evie for short. I think her whole name is adorable.
  • I know one (an adult).  She goes by Vangie.

  • Jane Evangeline was our top name if Charlie had been a girl. It was a mix of my mom's, grandmother's and two great-aunt's names. We were going to call her Evie, since my mom is Janey and my aunt is Jane. Good luck!
  • I know someone in her 20s with this name who pronounces it -leen. She doesn't go by a nn, I don't think.

  • I do!  She pronounced it -lyn.  She mostly went by her full name, but a group of us called her jelly after hearing her young nephew attempting to say her name and only being able to get jelly to come out.  Her middle name was Danae.

  • 1. -leen.

    2. both - no one was corrected for using a NN or the full name

    3. Evie

    4. I believe it is Hope or Faith - can't remember at the moment, but I know it was one of those genre of names.

  • Wow, thanks everyone for the responses! I was a little concerned no one would know an Evangeline since it's so far down on the SSA list (but steadily climbing). You guys helped a lot with my questions.

I'm thinking about Evangeline Louise, since that was MIL's middle name before she got married (changed it to her maiden name). DH doesn't want to use family names as middle names for this baby, though, so I may just have to keep looking....The only middle name I've absolutely refused is Grace, because pairing a name that means "gospel" with Grace is just too much.

    Thanks again for your help!

    1. -leen

    2. Nickname

    3.  She went by Evie. I didn't even know her name was Evangeline for a long time.

  • DD is Evangeline, pronounced -leen.  We do call her Evie most of the time but also call her Evangeline, sometimes Eve.  Other nicknames we call her at home sometimes are Eva and Vangie.  Her middle name is Mei (pronounced May) so sometimes I call her Evie Mei or Vangie Mei.  DH actually has an cousin named Evangelina (the g is said like an h) and she goes by Vangie, but we didn't actually know her full name when we named DD.  I love DD's name and I'm always surprised that it's not more popular.

    3.  Evan

    4.  don't know it

I think it's a beautiful name.  I love the idea of using the full name instead of a nickname.

  • I know two! I named my daughter Evangeline Winifred. she's two now but when she was born I had only met or ever even heard of one Evengeline, The woman who delivered me and who was also my first gynecologist lol! I'd loved the name my entire life I thought it was really unusual and my little brother's name is Evan so it seemed like the perfect name for my daughter. We pronounce it with the -line ending (with the long "i")  and we call her Evie (pronounced: Eee-vee) Much of the time; but one of the reasons I picked this name was that it has practically infinite nickname options so she can choose what she wants people to call her.
