My DH has an intolerance to tree nuts. It?s not a true allergy in the sense that he doesn?t get a rash or go into anaphylactic shock (if he eats even a tiny bit he gets extremely nauseated, vomits, and feels miserable for hours), and he is the only one in his family who has this problem. That being said, I am wondering what to do now that I am pregnant, and have read that it?s better to avoid foods to which either parent is allergic. Since it isn?t a true allergy, and because nuts are supposed to be very healthy, I?m wondering if it is still ok to eat them. If you were in my position would you avoid eating tree nuts? I?m going to ask my doctor about it when I see her in two weeks, but would appreciate some feedback in the meantime.
Re: Question about food allergies
I don't think food allergies are "made". I think if you're going to have an allergy to something, you're just gonna have it. Both of my nephews have severe food allergies--one to milk and eggs, and the other to peanuts. No one in our family has either of these allergies, and I know my sister is not a big milk drinker or anything..
I'll be interested to hear what your Dr. has to say!
I agree with this. My niece has a severe peanut allergy - goes into anaphylactic shock if she's even briefly exposed to peanuts. At the time my SIL was pregnant with her, her OB was of the school of thought that pregnant women should not eat anything potentially allergenic. SIL refrained from eating peanuts and all peanut-type products during pregnancy. No one knows where the allergy came from - no one on my DH's side of the family or SIL's husband's side of the family has this allergy.
This is an interesting question. I didn't avoid any food while pregnant and DD does not have any food allergies. My DH has a lot of food allergies (mostly fruits) and I am allergic to shellfish. We did standard one food at a time introducstion and she was fine.
