water for ff

We had a dr's appt today and my lo still isn't gaining like he should- he's still below his birth weight despite my non-stop efforts to bf and pump- it's just not working. Sad I am now going to supplement with formula at each feeding. I am going to use the newborn nursette bottles for a few days, until I run out, but then I will be using the powdered version of the enfamil newborn premium (or whatever it's called).  The directions on the canister just say to add water, but in one of my books it says to first boil the water for formula feeding. That just seems hugely impractical to me, especially if you have to make a bottle quickly.  We have a pur water filter attached to our tap and was hoping that was good enough.  If you formula feed, what do you do?

I know nothing about this! Thanks!

Re: water for ff

  • my LO gets one formula bottle per day.  i use bottled distilled water and i don't boil it.

  • With #1 I used a Brita pitcher and with #2 we are using bottled water.  The boiling route seems like a huge time-sucker!

  • When we were just supplementing I used the ready to feed formula since it was just so much easier for such a small amount at each feeding. Now that she's primarily FF I boil about a litre of water (sorry I'm Canadian, I don't know how much that is in metric) and then mix a pitcher of forumla up.

If I was you I would boil some water and keep it on your counter in a pitcher and use it as needed. It only takes a few minutes to boil it up every morning.

  • I buy gallon jugs of Gerber mixing water.  I get them at Wal mart they are a buck a piece.   I have to do this though because we found out our water has Iron in it and even filtering it doesn't make it clean.

  • We just use plan old tap water. Our Dr. didn't say to do anything different, so that's what we do.

  • I put the water from my fridge into a water bottle for the day so it becomes room temp and I use that throughout the day. I'm pretty sure most tap water is fine as long as it isn't well water. Your pedi should know if your home water is fine.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • we just buy a gallon of baby water at the grocery store.  it's never more than $1.02.  i just leave it on the counter next to the bottle rack.

  • When we had so many pediatricians tell us we couldn't breastfeed because of my medication we did a lot of research ... we came to the conclusion that we should use the store bought water ment for formula mixing - the reason behind this conclusion is the fluoride in tap water.  While it's fine for child and adult consumption (debatable - my mother is part of the dental community against fluoridated water) it's a bit high for newborns.

  • We are also supplementing 1-2 bottles per day of formula.  I bought some of the nursery water and keep it on the counter.  This is nice because in the middle of the night we can just pour the water in the bottle, add the powder, and no heating required.
  • I don't trust our tap water, so we use bottled. Usually the Nursery water or Gerber... depends on what store I'm at and what they have. It's about $1 for a gallon, and the gallon lasts 2-4 days (4 oz every 3 hours, but lately sometimes every 2 hours or 5 oz).

I buy some with Flouride added... it's not as much as what's in tap water, though.

  • I'm also supplementing and am using Nursery water.
  • Tap water through the Brita.
