Yes, because it's a lot less expensive for the government to provide contraception than it is to pay for children (Medicaid, WIC, etc)! The same can be said about the cost of preventive healthcare vs. treating an illness/disease.

Well, federal funding is already disallowed from going toward abortion services. Not so for state funding, though.
personally, i don't think the gov't should be in the business of directly funding health services. It's good enough for me that PP is a Medicaid provider.
Yes- condoms, birth control as well as education should be available to all. Even after all my infertility struggles I am Pro Choice, I do not feel the government should take away the woman's right to choose, that being said I am not pro abortion. However I feel that you must educate women who are faced with unplanned pregnancies of ALL their options, adoption, abortion, or parenting the child. Only then can a woman make an educated decision.

Planned Parenthood isn't just about birth control and condoms (though I think that is a very important function of what they do-- when I first graduated from college and had no insurance, I couldn't afford to go to a real doctor but could go to PP). It provides real health care to women who otherwise can't afford or access it.
Honestly I'm a little shocked at how many people think that PP uses federal money to pay for abortions, in general, but specifically after the government shut down fiasco of the past months. I realize I live in DC and it may be more front and center but as women I think we should know a little more about laws pertaining to OUR healthcare, whether we agree/support them or not.

Exactly this.
Infertility and m/c has not changed my stance on abortion at all. If anything it's made me more prochoice. I fully support the right of women to choose the option that is best for them.
Planned Parenthood is an organization that does excellent things, and they provide healthcare to women that cannot otherwise afford it. I see no problem with giving them some federal funding. If 'pregnancy crisis centers' can get funding, so can Planned Parenthood. They already can't use federal funds for abortions.
I also feel it is a bit ignorant to use the "its cheaper than funding medicaid or WIC ect." That is an uneducated blanket statement. WIC is a nutritional program that has helped many women on this board and others, and not all Medicaid is free. Based upon income, there are programs that families can have access to on a fee scale, and it has allowed many to have health care who otherwise would not have access to it. I know that maybe using those two as examples may have been just two that came to mind, but more research should be done as these are not necessarily handout programs given to babies of women who have children because they could not afford them, or an abortion.
I think the money should go more towards education on how NOT to get pregnant. There wouldn't be such an epidemic of abortions if there was more education on fertility cycles and more access to methods of birth control. Instead, abortion has become a form of birth control for a lot of women.
IF definitely changed my views on abortion. I used to be staunchly pro-choice, but now I am definitely pro-life. I believe abortion stops a beating heart. And since most women don't find out they are pg until the heartbeat stage, most abortions are performed after that stage. Everyone always defends a women's right to choose, but what about the growing fetus' right or the father's right?
My brother's ex was pg with his baby. She didn't want to keep it, but he DESPERATELY did. She went ahead and aborted it anyway because she had the right to choose. I will never meet my neice or nephew. My brother is emotionally scarred. She did what she wanted. It shouldn't be just the woman's right. But I digress.
Planned Parenthood does wonderful things for a lot of women, but I would like to see them get federal funding and use it for education on pg prevention.

The feds fund Title X, through the DHHS, which then provides funding in the form of grants to agencies that apply for funding and meet the criteria of the grant. PP has to compete against agencies providing women's health services, which is what Title X was created to do.
The controversy that nearly shut down the government was that the GOP added a specifc rider that would exclude PP alone from receiving money through Title X. PP doesn't get direct appropriations from congress. Congress gives money to DHHS and if the GOP got their way, PP wouldn't even be allowed to compete. It's actually likely unconstitutional (google "bill of attainder") AND it would save no money at all, since the appropriation to DHHS wouldn't change - PP just couldn't have it. The money would have just gone to another organization.
The whole thing was purely punitive, would not have saved a dime, and would not have accomplished anything other than making a few fringe GOPers look good. And hilariously for a group that's "all about" the constitution - they were proposing something unconstitutional.
Do I think PP should get federal funds? Depends. If they are best able to meet the objectives laid out by DHHS, yes. If another organization could do it better, then they can and will receive the funding instead - it's a competitive grant.

I'm not really sure how I feel about PP as a whole but they do do a LOT of good. I just wish they didn't have any part in abortions (I understand its NOT federally funded). Maybe that would help a lot of people (who are pro-life, like myself) be confident in their practice in general. There is no doubt they do good for many many woman but I can and will not ever be able to support abortions, that is my opinion and although SO many do not agree I think its fair to just agree to disagree.

I honestly did not know that federal money does not go to fund abortions, so thanks for the clarification. I am a conservative christian who will always vote republican for as long as my beliefs coincide with the majority of the candidate's. One thing that I always differed on when it came to the "sides" is that I was Pro-Choice. It was a constant fight w/ a lot of family, "no Christian can be for abortion". But at the time, I viewed conceiving & that miraculous life differently. I viewed morals differently and consequences for one's choices differently. I know many will disagree with me on lots of stuff (there are tons of dems/liberals here) and thats cool, I respect everyone's right to their own opinion/beliefs.
As to abortion & me changing from being Pro-Choice to Pro-Life...it has everything to do with IF, losing my babies, being blessed w/ my miracle son & as a result of all of this, I am closer to God than ever. This is the story of my son....
His BM had just turned 17 when she got pg. BF had just turned 19. BF comes from a good family, not rich, but not destitute. BM's family is completely awful to her. They are drunks & abusers who spend what little money they have on ciggs & beer. In spite of that, BM turned out to be a phenomenal young woman. Who had dreams for herself, even though everyone in her family told her going to college was stupid. She wants out of that house & to be away from them. Before making an adoption plan, the BPs went to FL to ask a judge to grant them permission to have an abortion. The judge said no. That is how close my beautiful son came to never existing. I cry just thinking about it. He is AMAZING. BPs love him, but they did not want him to have the only life they could offer. After that glorious judge turned them down, they decided to make an adoption plan, despite her parents giving her complete HELL for it. And the rest is history.
One of my besties adopted a baby girl. Her BM went to the abortion clinic, decision made, to terminate. Thankfully, she was too far along. That beautiful baby girl was so close to never having life.
There is one clinic left in the city in which DS was born & I'll donate & do whatever I can to help it get closed down. Too many women use it as a means of birth control. It's much too easy a "quick fix" for a "problem". After everything, I just can't imagine being pro-choice anymore. Not with knowing how many people are out there, ready to give futures to those women & the children they are carrying.

No. I'm okay with them accepting government sponsored insurance and then billing and getting reimbursed (with the exception of abortions) but I don't understand the government just giving them money. The government doesn't just send my doctor's office money to help it run.
If people support what Planned Parenthood does, then they should be willing to donate money to them. Thousands of charties run everyday based solely on donor support so I don't understand why Planned Parenthood can't do the same.
Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12
Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck. Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

I just don't see the logic of one or the other. Prevention or result. Why can't there be funding for both? This leg of an argument seems to rub me and others the wrong way.
Furthermore, WIC is funded by Grants through the USDA, and Medicaid is both state and federally Granted and funded, while PP is solely federally funded, so suggesting that we pay for one over the other would be a moot point. And with WIC, you only have to meet moderate income guidelines, not just low, so some of our IF moms who ended up with HOM, could and have very well taken advantage of WIC to help offset formula expenses if needed.

Nearly 2/3 of PP funding is private based. And as epphd eloquently pointed out PP is not directly funded by the government. They have access to government funds via grants. AND as many people have pointed out federal funds are not used to fund abortions. So unless any of us have read the grants and know what funding PP is applying for and receiving we probably don't have enough information to know whether they should or shouldn't be getting specific grants but I really don't understand why indirectly funding women's health services is so offensive to some. Boggles the mind considering all of us faced issues that are often considered to be squarely "women's health issues" either through IF treatment or pregnancy.

I know exactly what WIC and Medicaid is, and I also know many people who have used it when fallen on tough times, but I also know that if a woman can not afford birth control she will not be able to afford ANYTHING for a child. So why not fund PREVENTION instead. So it is not "ignorant" at all.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

This Cluttered Life
I just don't see the logic of one or the other.
While I'm still in agreement with the majority here...
Thank you so much for sharing your story, AuburnBride. Very, very powerful.
