Pregnant after a Loss

WWYD?

My mom is a Disney Vacation Club member, so she goes to Disney often and invites us all the time. Last summer, DH and I got a one-bedroom villa (totally nice) using her points and we had a blast.

She (my mom) is running the Disney half marathon on October 1st and has invited us--me, DH, and Rambo, who will be about 2 months old.

Obviously, this would be a leisurely Disney vacation for me--no hoofing it to see it all. I'm fine with that since I've been there 7 times. Rambo will chill in his stroller, the pool (can a 2 month old go in the pool??) and relax with us as we walk around and eat. I go there mainly to eat. DH and I can take turns going on rides, and I know my mom and step-dad would be gaga to watch Rambo whenever.

Here's the question: would you take a 2 month old to Disney World during the first week of October? The average temps for October, according to Weather.com are between 64-88 degrees F. I guess my main concerns are the people, the plane (2-hour ride), and the heat.

Re: WWYD?

  • I am curious to see what others say. I am a huge Disney fan and since we're in FL for 2 months and live in CA I bought the annual pass for both Disneyworld and Disneyland. Our baby will be about 5 months when the pass expires and I was wondering how soon I could start taking it to the park.

I'd mainly be concerned about germs and their immunity, more than the heat or the plane trip itself. I think other than that a baby would be totally content in a stroller, it'd just be up to you wanting to do that with all the diaper changes and feeding it entails.

Incidentally, on another plane trip we took out to Miami earlier this year, I sat next to a 2 month old baby who didn't make a peep the entire flight, he was so good, and that flight was a lot longer. Hope Rambo is that good on planes!

  • A 2 month old is not suppose to be in the pool or have sunscreen put on them and having the type of 2 month old that I did, NO.  I was not sleeping much and I was nursing all of the time.  I wouldn't be worried about walking around with loads of people, b/c it's not like everyone would we handling him or breathing on him, but I would be concerned with the heat.

  • I think that you can always get somewhere (like a restaurant) where it would be cooler.  The 2 hour plane ride might not be so bad.  The people....that's something that you can't get away from.  Just keep him covered so no one can see him, maybe they'll stay away!

If it really ends up being too much, you could do Disney/outing stuff for half a day and then stay near your room otherwise.  I bet even then that you would enjoy it.

It's really a tough decision and you will end up having to just do what's best for you and do what you want, but I have seen many young infants on planes and in airports, and they are the quietest babies on airplanes (it's the one and two year olds that really have a set of lungs, haha!)

  • I would. The baby is just going to sleep, and I think a 2-hour plane ride is doable. My parents traveled with us often, even that early, and as long as you plan out the diaper/bottle situation and mentally accept that the child might cry, you'll make it through.

We're going to DW in Nov. Cami will be older, obviously, but I can't wait!

  • If it were me, i'd absolutely go. After this traveling will be much more difficult and with built-in baby sitters, who could beat that?!

  • I'd say go for it. I'm not a mom, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but as a pediatrician, you should be fine. You don't want baby to get much sun exposure, so the pool may be out, but you can go for walks and get some fresh air. You want to keep strangers from touching a baby this young because of germs, but that should be do-able. You can actually get the 1st set of shots as early as 6 weeks so that baby will have some protection before your trip. Many mom's of 2 month olds are feeling stir crazy, so getting away for a little while, esp. to a place where you will have built-in babysitters sounds like a good idea for me.

Again, not a mom- yet, so can't speak from experience.

  • I don't know.  I'd have to ask the pediatrician first.  I know you're supposed to wait X amount of time before flying, but I don't know how long that is (it's for ear development).  I'd also probably play it by ear (no pun intended) to see how he's doing around that time and if it's a feasible trip for him.

  • I don't have any actual experience traveling with a 2 month old, so you can take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I say if you're up for it, then I would go.  Unless Rambo is colicky, 2 months might actually not be a bad time to fly, because at that point all they really do is sleep, and a 2 hour flight isn't bad.  I might bring a varied range of clothing for him, since it will be hard to know just how the heat will be and what will work best, but the 80's isn't that hot.  I don't know if I'd worry about the people, since the crowds will be distracted by everything else going on at Disney, and especially if you have a good shield for the stroller they'll probably be more likely not to notice that the baby is a newborn.

  • I think you could do it, as long as you recognize that you might not do as much as you normally do.  If it was a 90+ degree day, I would probably spend a lot of time indoors.  Depending on your stroller, they can get pretty warm in there.

You also can't put sunscreen on a 2 month old, and it's not recommended to bring them into pools, so I would keep that in mind.

  • Absolutely no.  It's way too early to expose Rambo to that many germs.

  • I would do it. I wouldnt worry to much about germs, its not like you are gonna be passing him around to strangers in DL. :) I think it would be fun, and like you said,  you can relax in the hotel if you want.

My DD liked the pool at 2 months, it was for a very short amount of time though.... :) Her ped said it was fine, and he said i should put sunscreen on her all the time since she is red headed, even if i was in the shade. So i have never heard the no sunscreen thing..Im a nurse at a ped office, and we recommend Aveeno, ask your doc if they have a sample. Just test it on a small patch of his skin first to make sure he isnt allergic, i use it on DD all the time and she is allergic to everything!!

So if you want to, i say go for it!!! The only thing i would be nervous about is the plane ride.. ;)

  • I totally would.  Rambo will probably be in a stroller/baby carrier most of the time so I don't think you'd really have to worry about germs.  I mean at that age a lot of babies are in daycare.

October is a really great time to go.  You might have some more crowds because of the race, but the weather will be great.  If it gets too hot or too crowded, you already mentioned this, but Disney is VERY family friendly (duh!) so there are areas where you can escape to cool down and BF.

bumping from my phone. please pardon any typos and missing punctuation
  • You should be fine as long as you aren't in direct sun for long periods. Go and enjoy a few days away. That said b/c you don't really know what your baby will be like I would wait quite a while before ordering plane tickets.

As to the pool a baby cannot wear sunblock until 6 months and it is not recommended that they get in a pool until that age. The chemicals on their sensitive skin in additional to all of the things that live in a public pool is not something I would do. I managed a pool and no matter how well you care for it there are still many people that pee and spit in the pool, not to mention the shocks that happen after puke, blood or poo.

  • That time of year I wouldn't worry about people's germs. I just know you can do much more with babies under 6 months, so taking advantage is something I wish we had done more.

When are you interviewing pediatricians? Maybe ask at those appointments.

  • I would have no problem with it. Just know that you'll probably be tired, so go there to enjoy yourself...not to ride every ride in the park, KWIM?

I'm taking this baby on a 5 hour plane flight when she's a little bit less than 2 months (assuming the dr says it's cool), and a 2.5 hour plane flight when she's about 4 weeks old.

For the people, the crowds are actually much less in October. Have stroller, will travel.

And honestly, assuming that you're not passing the baby around to every Tom, D!ck, and Harry that you see, I don't really understand the "ooooh! He'll come in contact with germs!" arguement. Heck, he'd probably encounter more germs on your normal trip to the grocery store. Just use wipes on your hands before you hold him...I don't think it's that big of a deal.

For the heat, if it is hot, then just retire to an airconditioned building for awhile. People have been having babies for eons, and a/c is a fairly new invention. Oddly enough, the human race has survived, despite the babies not being in perfect 68 degree weather all the time. Wink

This part made me laugh, I agree on the heat thing, besides the high 80s doesn't seem that hot to me!

  • It's hard for me to say. I like to be open about everything when it comes to being a parent, b/c I have no idea what I will feel or want after she gets here.  My first thought is that I wouldn't want to go when she's so young...but I could totally surprise myself and not be a paranoid, uptight mother of a newborn  :p

  • FWIW our pediatrician said they usually prefer you wait until 2 months to fly and that it be after baby gets the first round of vaccines...so that would probably put you in the clear.  Disney is like the baby mothership so I think you'd be fine.  We had to fly at 2 weeks due to a family emergency and she just advised us to get a sling and keep him in there so people wouldn't be tempted to touch.  :)

  • Yup I definitely would. DS was so easy to travel with as a baby and at 2 months it would still feel like a vacation (now at 2 years old a 2 month old in a carseat or stroller on vacation sounds like a dream lol!). My dad lives in florida and october is beautiful, warm but not humid and I think there are babies in that state too who get along fine with the weather and these mysterious millions of people who are going to want to touch your newborn ;) As far as the flight, my son did fine on a plane at 2 months, 4 months, and all of the 12 flights he was on including two international trips by the age of one. We travel and the kid is actually impressively portable ha ha
  • I wasn't worried about people touching him; I have no problem being a ***. What I meant by "people" was crowds and germs.

  • FWIW, I flew with my then 2.5 month old son across the ocean to Europe to visit family. Granted, I had my mom fly with me because we were lugging a ton of stuff on top of a stroller, on top of a carseat, on top of a....

....but, it was easy peasy. Airplane motor humming is a sleep inducer! He was good the entire 12+ hrs on the plane. Toddlers....a different situation altogether.

And I agree, Disney is very family-oriented with a ton of places where you can retreat and quietly breastfeed and stuff.

I think it will be a nice change of pace...at two months old people get a cabin fever a lot of times, because it's exhausting to be stuck at the house all the time, doing the same ole stuff by yourself..

    Enjoy your va-ca!
