Diaper change troubles

Charlie is really fussing so much at diaper change time that it's making it almost impossible and it's stressful for everyone.  He screams and he tries to roll over which is really bad when there's poop involved.  I've tried to distract him with toys, singing, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions that I may not have thought of?

Re: Diaper change troubles

  • Aaron did this for the longest time. He still does occasionally.

Basically what worked for me was to give him things he normally wouldn't be allowed to have (ie. diaper cream) while I was changing his diaper. Then, when DH and I got smart phones (Droid for DH, iPhone for me) we would play videos for him while changing his diaper.

Distraction/redirection... or, if all else fails, pure brute strength.

    NOT easy.

  • I sit on the floor when he gets too bad and pin him between my legs.  If it gets too bad, I call DH to help.

I did this too. Works well most of the time.

I am in such a goofy mood tonight I was going to ask if you had tried duct tape to keep him still. Micheals now has funky prints and colours.  Sigh...I need to pull a prank or do something to shake the dingbat out of me. Tongue Tied

Redirection.  Assign a toy that he gets only when his diaper is changed.  Eventually he'll get bored, but he may be old enough then for you to instruct him "no rolling".  Honestly, this only worked so well with DS, but it made me feel better to try.

Like the duct tape idea, gimmetimmies! Tee Hee

  • With Jason we switched to training pants when he was about a year old b/c they are easier to put on when the baby is twisting and trying to escape.

  • My Charlie is doing this all the time right now, too.  When he's really fighting me, I take him to the laundry room and stick him in the deep sink and just change him standing up.   At least if he's gonna get poop everywhere, it's in the sink already!

  • Similar to pp, we let S hold things she normally can't have/doesn't get to play with.  It tends to entertain her long enough to get her changed.  Then the item goes away until the next diaper.  I'm having to change the item weekly as she tends to lose interest after that.
