lets talk sun protection

my DS' skin is so fair. last year we just kept him covered as much as possible (clothes wise) and out of the sun..especially on our outer banks trip in july. we will be doing the same trip this year, in addition to being out in our new yard, local lake trips, and even day trips to the zoo & stuff. i need some hats / sunglasses & sunscreen for the little guy. something good for his fair / sensitive skin.

if you can recommend your stuff, i'd appreciate it! thank u

Re: lets talk sun protection

  • I too HAVE to use sunscreen on my little one. She is very fair like me and burns quickly- (Unfortunately forgot sunscreen the first nice day here and she ended the da w/ some rosey cheeks)

Anyways.. Last year we used 50 SPF Coppertones Baby-hypoallergenic- the pink bottle. I think this year I will use the same thing, but the spray since she is so active and we will be going to the beach etc.. I will be using the stick for her face so I don't get it in her eyes.

We also have to use hats-but only  ones that tie under her chin or she will yank them off.

  • I recommend hats that have chin straps.  My DD just rips the other ones off immediately, she also won't wear sunglasses.   I think they have good hats at the Carters store.  Other than that try to keep him in the shade as much as possible and make sure you take a stroller with a decent canopy :)

I haven't found a sunscreen I like yet, so maybe some others have some suggestions :)

  • My DS is super fair (as you can see in my siggy).  We used California Baby sunscreen last year and it worked great!  He didn't ever get even the least bit pink or tan.  I even put it on his hair because he refused to wear hats.

Also did you see I paged you?

  • Same situation.
We just got back from Maui w/out a single burn and we spent tons of time in the sun. I found some great hats on TRU.com.

We used (between us) an entire bottle of Banana Boat Water Babies SPF 50.

I bought the spray on baby SPF 75 of the same brand. It wasn't as easy to put on. It was a foam.

  • It's always hot and sunny here (already hit 90, yipee) so we go thru a lot of sunscreen.  I like the neutrogena pure and natural (I think that's what it's called) for kids.  I use the spray and I have a stick for her face.  I also sometimes spray it into my hands ot put it on her face.  I also have an iplay sun hat and love it.  It's spf 50 (or 70 I can't remember) and has an adjustable drawstring at the back you can tighten to keep it on and a tie chin strap.

I just slather DD in sunscreen and put the hat on her.  She knows how to undress herself so I just assume she's going to take off anythign long sleeved when she gets hot so I just put sunscreen everywhere while she's naked and then get her dressed.

  • We used California Baby last year, but it's only SPF 40.  DS never got burnt with it though.  This year I expect us to be outside more, however, so I'm going try the Neutrogena kids stuff because it has a higher SPF.

My pharmacist cousin has told me that Ombrelle is the best sunscreen to use for us and for kids (can't remember why exactly- it was last year), so that's what we use and it works great. My DD is very fair too.

Very informative and helpful site.  It recommends sunscreens/blocks and rates them ALL and tells you why each ingredient is good or bad.

  • Another vote for California Baby - we used that when we were in Playa del Carmen in Feb and my daughter didn't get even a hint of a burn. I'm very fair and burn super easily, so I'm sure she does too. We just used the hat from Target - I've seen them there every year. It has a chin velcro strap and comes in several colors. Worked great - she tried taking it off a few times but we kept putting it back on and finally she stopped trying after we got her interested in a toy.
