BF'd babies... how many ounces?

So, I've read that BF'd babies don't necessarily increase their intake in terms of ounces b/c the properties of bm change to the baby's needs, unlike formula.  So, how many ounces of BM does your 2 to 3 mo old baby take?  I'm trying to figure things out for daycare.  Right now, she's just doing 1 bottle a day so I don't really know.

I was thinking of doing 5 bottles with 3.5 oz each for 9 hours in daycare.  Does this sound good?  In my mind, this is accounting for having some extra as well.

  • DS will take a 4 ounce bottle from DH.  I haven't tried more and don't think I will, because he seems satisfied after that.  He does, however, get really upset when DH stops him to burp at 2 oz or halfway, until DH gives him the bottle back.  I'd say you should have plenty if you send those 5 bottles.

  • My son will take 3-4 4oz bottles while staying with my mom. He usually finishes off the whole bottle but will occasionally have a little levtover. I drop him off at 7:30am and BF before leaving. I pick him up by 5:30pm.

  • Thanks ladies.  I figure I much rather have too much than not enough!

Yep! Better to be safe than sorry. If I ever have any leftover, I just freeze it for emergencies.

  • Up until 2 months LO would only take 3-3.5 oz before dozing off or slow/stop sucking down BM bottles at night. for the last couple weeks though he gets mad if there is any less then 4oz in the bottle, and he gets pissed when you stop half way through to burp him too. I have started my freezer stash for work and I have been trying to freeze in 2 & 4 oz increments to avoid any waste. I asked the pedi how much to freeze the bottles at thinking they would know how many oz he would be drinking at 3.5 months but all she said was as much as he wants is fine as long as he isn't spitting up a lot, and it should be a minimum of 2oz at 2+ months.

  • when I pump I pump out 4 oz, so I figured that must be what he drinks during a normal feeding.  That's what we give him when we give a bottle and he's happy and satisfied afterwards so I guess it's right!

babies should drink at least 24 oz per 24 hr period, so divide that by the number of feedsing your LO takes by breast and you should have a good number.

  • I just started back to work this week. DD BFs at 6 am then I leave 4 4oz bottles for my sister. She may eat less at one feeding, but then eat the remaining ounces and her whole 4oz bottle at the next feeding. And then I am home in time to BF again at 5 pm. So I would say you should be good. Just make sure daycare doesn't throw out any bottles if not used like they may with formula.

  • A takes 4 - 5 oz right before bed (10 pm) and when he wakes up first thing in the morning (5 - 6 am). He eats 4 oz every 3 - 4 hours during the day.

  • I pumped today and got 3 oz from each breast so I gave it all to DS in a bottle and he drank all 6 oz! Could not believe it. He nurses every 2.5-3 hours.

  • our little one goes to take dc with four-3oz bottles which she typically finishes well.  initally we had tried 4-4oz and she could never finish them in one sitting and the DC was always trying to get her to finish them in their 2 hour window. their policy is once they start a bottle then need to finish it within 2 hours or it's tossed. I definately didn't want precious BM tossed especially since I'm barely keeping up with her.  She's at dc ~9 hours. Some days she only needs 3 of the bottles just depends-also depends if we're going straight home to nurse vs need to run errands etc.

Just today I'm bumping her to 2-3.5 oz and 2-3 oz and see how she does finishing them.
