Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How do you stay sane?

DH works a LOT-leaves at 7, gets home at 6/6:30, and has take home work to do at home after that in addition to being on call (from home) every other day. I'm a SAHM, so I am at home with LO all day. Getting the laundry done, cleaning and getting dinner on the table at night on top of taking care of the fussy/colicky/high maintenance (whatever you want to call it, she is) LO I have is getting to be a little much. All 3 of us went to DH's conference over the weekend and saw an old friend who asked, "What do you do to keep sane?" I didn't have an answer other than TB. What do you all do and how do you find the time to do it?

  • Hmm... I am the opposite (sorry) of you. My DH works from home and I have a very easy baby. It is still a challenge to keep a clean house, do laundry and dishes and entertain the baby. I would say that I get out a lot. I go for walks every day and try to have one activity every day - meeting friends for lunch, going shopping, etc.

  • I work 17 hours a week. I'd be rocking back and forth in the corner dealing with a toddler and an infant 24 hours a day.

  • How do you stay sane ?  Someone needs to let me know how.  I have 5 kids (7 and under), work part time and have a self employed husband whose hours are all over the place.  For me exercise, spending time doing things I enjoy once the kids go to sleep and trying not to worry about all the little things help keep me (somewhat) sane.  However, at the same time my house is never clean enough, I don't spend enough time with my kids or my husband and there are always 1000 things to do.  I guess that's what I get for having so many kids!

  • I am a SAHM of 5 I home school 1 so 4 are at home all day..We play games; I bump and I text my DH who is out of town for work..Then at night I curl up with the cat, dog, and my high maintenance dd and read a book or watch TV depending on the night. After DD is finally asleep I take a bubble bath.

  • TB and internet in general.

Now that the weather is starting to warm up I'm sure I'll think of more things to do to entertain us.

The more I think about this, the more I don't get it.

DH and I work.  Everything gets done each day.  So I would have to think if he DH worked 9-5, and you worked 9-5 watching your child, once 5 hit, everything got done by both partners just like it does in families where both parents work.

I guess I don't understand this frantic need to get every damn thing done while husbands are at work.  You both have 9-5 (ish) jobs -- his outside the home, yours providing child care.  After hours, you balance your home like everyone else.

I totally can understand what you are saying, and I am so grateful for being home with my kids. But...if you are home with a child/children all day by yourself it's hard to "stay sane". I think it's from being inside all day and not really having much option of doing things by yourself, like go to the bathroom, eat, shower, etc.etc...

  • I am home now on an extended maternity leave with my 2 kids and I have to say that being home gets more fun as your kid gets older, IMO, because there is so much to do!  So hang in there!  The best advice I can give you is to try to GET OUT as much as possible!  Don't worry so much about the house, maybe cook one day for 2-3 days and get out at least once per day with your baby.  It has taken me a while to get into the swing of being home, but now I LOVE IT!  We are soooo busy!  (And my DH works from 5:30am-6pm so I feel your pain).  Check meetup.com or see if you have a local playgroup, join a mommy and me class, check your local YMCA or JCC to see what events they have for kids.  I know some other moms that are home so we go visit friends and have playdates, etc.  I try to get out daily, even if its a trip to Target or to visit family, etc.  Good luck.

  • I go to a spinning class with one of my friends 2 x per week.  It helps to get out of the house and do something that I would have done before I got pregnant.

  • Apparently it involves the internet, because when it went out on Monday I cried.  And mostly what I do on the internet is bump.

This is how I feel sometimes!

Thankfully my family lives close by and helps out a lot!

I think this is my main complaint. We moved to a new city when I was pregnant. I didn't work, so I haven't been able to meet many people in the area. All of my family is 3 hrs away and DH's family is 4+ hrs away.
