Late crawlers...please come in

Hey,

I have an almost 9 month LO who loves to sit and sit. She has been happily sitting for months now. She hates being on her tummy. Usually "swims" when in this position. She can roll but she doesn't when she on her tummy. She does not crawl or attempt to crawl. We just recently got her to pull her self up (with some help) to a standing position when holding onto our fingers but she has no concept she is standing (she locks her knees and lets go of our fingers). She is doing fine with other developmental milestones (feeding herself, says "da-da," waves).

I'm not sure if I should be concerned (and have an early intervention eval) or wait until she is 10 months and see what happens. I know babies develop at different rates. I know lots of babies who skipped crawling and went to walking, but most of them rolled around to get places or showed other physical advances that LO is not.

I wouldn't be concerned, some babies never crawl. DS did not start to crawl until he was almost 9 1/2 months and just started pulling himself up at over 10 months. He had only started rolling himself to get around just before that. Run it by your pediatrician and see what they say just to be sure. It's so hard not to compare your LO to other babies. I am constantly comparing my DS to his older cousin and have to stop myself.

The average age for crawling is 8 months. The average means some crawl before 8 months and a whole bunch crawl after 8 months. 3 weeks is not late. Relax. If you want to encourage crawling, stop putting your LO down in a sitting position. Place her down on her belly with a toy in front of her. Just far enough that she needs to reach for it. If she protests, get down on the floor with her. Lie down facing her and play with the toy together.

My DD is not crawling yet. She just rolls everywhere. We are working on it in PT though. But that is only because she was already in there for late diagnosed torticollis. She can push up on her hands, but doesn't like to. I think the only reason she does as much as she does though its PT. She tries to get her butt in the air, but can't do it yet. She isn't even close to pulling up. Anyways, if I were you, I wouldn't worry. My pedi said her son didn't even move until 11.5 months.

Thanks ladies. I do tummy time with her every day (at short intervals multiple times throughout the day). I get down on the floor and place toys out of her reach. She just gets mad and screams. I will continue to do this.

DD started crawling around the 9.5 month mark very well. It will come. All babies develop at their own rate.

R didn't crawl until after 10 months and there were no signs she was even close. She just up and crawled across the bathroom one day while I was showering. The pedi said up to 12 months is normal, I wouldn't worry about it.

One of mine didn't army crawl until 10 months and then did the real crawl on all 4s after 11 months. My pedi was not at all worried when she didn't crawl at 9 months. My other one crawled at 8 months but now the other is pretty much catching up to her in what she can do and she can keep up with her in a chase

I wouldn't worry about it at all. On these boards, it seems like everyone's kid crawls early. But the people I know IRL, many of their kids started crawling at 9, 10, 11 months.

This was DS at just over 9 months. No signs of crawling, wouldn't get up on hands/knees, no rocking, etc. Then one day he just crawled across our bedroom floor to get to a toy. He had actually started walking prior to this point and now prefers to crawl everywhere.

I definately wouldn't be concerned. We had just been to his 9 month appt. prior to him crawling and the pedi was not concerned in the least.

I wouldn't be concerned at this point. At DS's 9 month appointment he wasn't crawling yet and I voiced my concern to the pediatrician, and the next week he started to crawl and pull himself up. Some babies just take a little bit longer.

DD didnt start to army crawl until about 10 - 10 1/2 months and still isn't really crawling. She can army crawl pretty much everywhere now and gets around well but still doesnt get rocking back onto her knees to actually crawl. She will occasionally rock back into a crawling position but not actually go anywhere. Not really worried about it at this point, we have our 12 month appointment in a few weeks so I figure we will talk to our pedi at that point to see if I should be concerned but I figure she will get there when she gets there. I dont think I am going to have a 20 year old that is still army crawling so I figure she will be fine, if you get overly worried about every milestone I figure you will drive yourself crazy for the next 18 years

Pfft...crawling isn't a developmental milestone. Aditya is almost a year, and he's just started to half scoot/half crawl...like last week...

I know it's hard not to worry...I asked the doctor, too. It's all good, though...

E showed no interest in crawling until she was a little over 10 months old. She learned to crawl in three days. She was like your baby - learning to pull herself up, happily sitting, etc. One day, she started sitting cross-legged and dragging herself around with her hands. The next day she tucked one leg underneath and pulled herself around. The third day she was crawling. I kid you not.

Anyway, your baby sounds like she's doing fine!

James is 10 months now and still isn't crawling. And he really only started to scoot around on his tummy in the last week or so. I wouldn't be worried about it just yet.

I wouldn't worry about it. DD doesn't crawl since she hates being on her tummy but she is still mobile as she scoots on her bum instead which she started a little after she turned 9 months. Some babies use other methods to get around.

You're not alone! DD is in the same boat- sat unassisted really early (4.5 months) and was content to just do that. Always hated tummy time, rolled over abut 5 times total (ever), started pulling up onto her knees about a month ago, and just started "scooting" this week. Still not crawling.

DS will be 1 year in less than a month (May 5th) and shows no interest in crawling. He will get in the crawling position and rock then roll over! It is perfectly normal to be concerned! I remember hoping my ds#1 was walking by his first bday. Now I am just hoping my little man crawls!!! He is perfectly content "chillin"!!! My pedi said her youngest child did not crawl until he was 13 months old!!

My son hated being on his belly and I was convinced he would never crawl. As soon as you put him on tummy he would instantly roll to back. He never even rolled belly to back until one night in his crib he woke up screaming because he was stuck at bottom of crib., I later witnessed that he was rolling over and crawling backwards in his sleep- ha ha. He did this for a few weeks and then finally started crawling forward. It will happen when he is ready. If you have concern, talk to pediatrician, but I have friends that babies started crawling at 6 mo and other at 11 months. My son started at 10.5 months.

DD turns one tomorrow (yay!) but didn't start army crawling until 2 weeks ago. When we last went to the pedi, she said that it wasn't a concern unless her other gross motor skills were also lacking. Since DD was clapping, grasping objects and rolling over, the lack of crawling wasn't an issue.

I wouldn't worry. My DS is 11 months old and you described him exactly when describing your DC. My pedi is not concerned and neither am I. I was a very late walker and so was my husband. IMO, the whole crawling thing seems a bit hard esp since my DS can sit for literally hours and entertain himself.

DD had NEVER gotten up on her hands and knees, but started to pull herself across the room on her belly around 7 1/2 months. At 8 months 3 weeks she finally got up on her knees and took off like she had been crawling for weeks much to our surprise! Two weeks later she started walking! "Late" bloomers will eventually catch up, or even creep ahead!!
