My SO and I cannot agree on the spelling for our LO's name. With his impending arrival just around the corner (Monday!), I thought I'd enlist some help!
The name we are going with is "Hawk-in" (yes, like the "Hawkin" in Hakinson and I totally understand if it's not your style!)
We have two spellings in consideration
- Hakan, the Swedish version and
- Haakon, the Norwegian version.
Now being from MN, one of us thinks Hakan will get pronounced more like "Hack-in" with a strong MN accent where as the other things that people are going to be corrected no matter what unless we spell Hawken. What do you ladies think?
Re: Help! Name Spelling!
I'm all for unusual names and spellings, but my personal opinion is no matter which of those two spellings you go with his name is going to be mispronounced. Given the choice, I'd say go with the Swedish spelling, as the Norwegian spelling reminds me of the singer Akon.
I agree that no matter what spelling you pick, it is going to get mis-pronounced. I would personally go with the Norwegian spelling. People (at least around here) will see the name, and even if they don't know how to pronounce it, they will likely recognize it as a Scandinavian name. IMHO, I think people will see the Swedish spelling and think it is a made-up name.
Congrats and good-luck on Monday!

Swedish is Scandinavian too.
But I do agree that neither spelling is going to get the pronunciation you want.
