Can round ligament pain really be this bad?

For a week or so now I've been getting this horrible stabbing pain in my right lower abdomen.  It really is an awful pain that has sometimes stopped me in my tracks but up until now I've been able to deal with it.  This morning the pain was unbearable. I could not walk and was doubled over in pain and in tears. After calling off work I went back to bed and was able to sleep for an hour. When I woke up the pain was gone and just felt tender in that spot. I went ahead and called the nurse at my doctor's office and she says it is round ligament pain. I never knew RLP could be this bad. I didn't experienced pain like this with my first pregnancy.

At my 36+ wk appt. yesterday the doctor said the pain could be from constipation issues I've been having throughout this pregnancy and to just keep taking my stool softener and fiber supplement.  However, I had 2 bowel movements yesterday (sorry TMI) and then woke up with the horrible pain.  My MW also said that if it was appendicitis I would have fever and vomiting and the pain would not go away.

So I guess that leaves RLP even though I don't feel like this is normal pregnancy pain. Anyone experience pain like this? Does it sound like normal RLP?

  • That sounds awful! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I got RLP, but never to the point where I was doubled over in tears. I hope you get some relief.

  • I never had RLP that bad-- and I do hope thats all it is. But FWIW I had appendicitis 2.5 years ago and had an emergency appendectomy and I dont remember having a fever, I was vomitting from the pain being so bad but the pain definitely was in waves-- some times it was so bad I was obviously crying, couldnt move, throwing up, but then it would go away a little bit to the point where it made me doubt that it was something serious. I actually had an appointment that day to get my wisdom teeth removed and I even tried to go to the appointment despite the pain I had been having all evening (I thought it was nerves/stomach ache at first lol) Needless to say they didnt remove my wisdom teeth and I ended up going to my OB first (to rule out ovarian cysts) and then to the ER where sure enough it was my appendix. It took about 18-20 hours of being in pain before we figured out what it was. Maybe ask to come in anyway and show them where the pain is? Cant hurt and maybe it will give you a peace of mind or they will have some suggestions of how to treat the pain.

  • I've had RLP in all three of my pregnancies and it was worse with each pregnancy, but it never caused me to double over in pain or cry.  That's alarming and if you haven't already I would tell the nurse you spoke with that it's that bad.  She may not really be getting the whole picture.  I hope that's all it is, but I don't like the way you're describing it.  I would really bug your OB's office to get you in for an appointment tomorrow or go to the ER or urgent care if gets much worse.

Also I agree with Lauren about the appendicitis thing.  I recently had pain so bad that I thought it might be appendicitis and I googled the symptoms and I did read that the pain can come and go.  Two days later I had the same pain and DH insisted I go to the ER (it was way worse than labor) and it turned out to be a UTI, which is another possibility for you.  UTI's can get pretty bad.
