Re: What ?'s should I ask DR

  • Here are some questions I would ask the doctor:

    1)  What happens at 37 weeks to help her determine if a VBAC or recurrent c-section is better?  If you are 0cm dilated at 37 weeks, does she schedule you for a cesarean?  What indicators is she looking for at this point?

    2) How would she induce?  What week would she induce?  What signs of readiness (i.e. Bishop score) does she look for?  What kinds of limits/restrictions would they have in a spontaneous labor VBAC vs induced VBAC (if any, it could be similar either way...things like continuous monitoring, etc)

I'm surprised she gave you the wait and see later line.  Since you've had two prior vaginal deliveries, your odds of a VBAC are very high.  It seems to me that she is probably looking for a reason to schedule the section ... whether that's at 37 weeks when you haven't dilated yet (many women haven't/don't and go on to have their VBACs) or during labor when something happens and the OR is "right there" --- OB's words.

As for the planning, I just have one child now and we have family in town, so I can call at the drop of a hat and have someone take him.  So I can see how not being able to know when you might go into labor if you have 3 kids at home could be stressful.  Do you have any kind neighbors, friends or anyone that could lend a hand?  The other option would be to schedule a recurrent cesarean.  But you know about the recovery and I'd think that inconvenience would outweigh the waiting on labor inconvenience.  You'd also be in the hospital longer, so your DH would have more time home alone with the kids while you tried to manage a newborn with just the nurse's help following surgery (if you decided to go the rcs route)

On the surface, from what you've said here, I don't think your OB is very VBAC friendly.  I don't know if you have other options, but I would probably investigate another provider if I was really set on a VBAC and an OB was saying these things.

GL!  I think you have great odds with a supportive provider.

Thank you so much. I will be asking her all this next week!

Im not sure if i have the option of changing my provider. I think my insurance said i have 3 months and that 3 months may have just ended.. Im really hoping she is on board with VBAC and like you mentioned the down time is much less and rcs would mean longer in the hospital..

If you can think of anything else please let me know!!  Thanks again!

  • Do keep us posted on how she responds!  I've never heard of the 3 month rule, but you could always ask your insurance more questions about it.

Since you've already had two vaginal births, I see no reason for her to have any reluctance whatsoever.  You can do it!

I will deff. keep you posted! My appt is next week and im having my hubby go with me..he seems to be a bit more vocal than I am. He isnt as "accepting" of blow off answers as I was with my original talk with the Dr.. I guess at that time since i didnt know all the facts and if i would be able to do it, i just went with what the Dr said.
