Early ultrasound question

This really isn't how I wanted to announce my BFP but...

I POAS about a week and a half ago and it was positive...yeah!  My hCG numbers were high as of last week.  According to my calculations, I am just at six weeks (today.)  We had an ultrasound yesterday and they weren't able to find the yolk sac or fetal pole.  The tech wasn't very helpful when explaining what that meant although I sort of knew it probably wasn't good.  She said it could just be too early to see anything and that my doctor would most likely want me to have another ultrasound in a week.  I'm waiting for my doctor to call me back so I can talk to him about it and ask my questions.

So has anyone experienced this?  What was the outcome?  Please share, having Google at my fingertips is not helping right now.  Sad  Although I am trying to remain hopeful!

Edited to add:  This is obviously not FB friendly, we have told very few people.  So please do not say anything.  Thank you.

  • I had a similar experience when I was pregnant with my second baby. I had a really bad stomach bug, around 5 weeks pregnant, and I got a high fever. They had me come in for an ultrasound, thinking I was a little further along. They didn't see much going on, and told me to come back the following week.

I was so scared, but it turns out it really was just too early to see anything.

I hope that's the same case for you!:)

  • I also don't have any advice, but I am hoping your calculations weren't exactly right, and it was just a bit too early.  Keeping you in my thoughts!

  • I had early ultrasounds with my second pregnancy since I was seeing an RE.  At 5 1/2 weeks you could see only the gestational sac and nothing else, it just looked like a little black circle.  At 6 1/2 weeks you could see the yolk sac.  Since I was seeing an RE I knew exactly how far along I was, so if you're even a few days off it could definitely make a difference in what you see on the ultrasound.  Hoping for the best for you!
  • If it were me personally, I'd probably POAS again just to see the response.  If it was still a BFP, it would help ease my mind.

  • I don't know, but I'll keep you in my thoughts. I'm also guilty of peeing on sticks "just to check" that early on.

  • Being that early, if you are off by even a few days it can make all the difference in the world. I went for my 1st ultrasound at 6wks 4 days (I did IUI so I knew exactly) and I couldn't see a thing! The RE did find the fetal pole, but he had to look for a few minutes. At the 8 wk ultrasound there was much more to see. You may have your days off by just a few and it's also possible to implant later than others so everything could be just fine. I know the 1 wk wait will be an eternity, but 1 week can make a big difference in an ultrasound that early.

Best of luck to you, I will be hoping you were just a bit early. And step away from Google.

  • I would just sit tight for now.  You could be out by a day or two which is why you didn't see anything.  Next week a week later you will see a difference.  I've had 5 week u/s and one every other week for a while with DD because my Progesterone was never at the right level and bleeding early on.  at 5 weeks there really wasn't a lot to see, 6 weeks you may or may not see a HB or fetal pole, 7 weeks we were always able to see most everything.

    HTH and Good Luck!

  • First off congrats on your BFP! I had an unexpected U/S when i first found out i was pg with Ben due to a large cyst. we'd been TTC for quite some time and i had used OPK's so i was positive i was due on the 18th. nothing showed up on th u/s and i thought i was about 6 weeks along. even though my numbers doubled i was heartbroken! i went back a week later for another u/s and there he was =) at that appointment they changed his due date from the 18th to the 28th. apparently it was spot on because he was born on his due date =)

  • ..coming out of lurker mode..

I had a very similar experience. I had 3 ultrasounds before the little fetal pole & HB appeared on the screen. The first showed nothing, the second showed the gestational sac and the third was when she made her debut. I was a nervous wreck and google was NOT my friend. It is amazing how just a few days is all your sweet little one needs to grow!

Congrats on your BFP! Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!

  • Congratulations on your bfp!  I didn't have an US until 10 weeks, my first appt was at 6 weeks and they said it was probably too early at that point.  Many thoughts and prayers for you, and that next week gives you a nice clear picture.

  • Congrats on your BFP! I havent ever had any early ultrasounds but I agree w/ all the pp's. Hopefully your dates are just slightly off and it was just too early. Or even if your dates are correct maybe implantation just happened late. Try not to let yourself get too worked up until you have some firm answers (I know easier said than done). Keep us updated!! ((hugs))

  • I have no advice but I wanted to say Congrats!!!
  • Congrats on your BFP!  I am praying that the calculations are off and it's just a little early.

  • Congrats on your BFP  :)

I hope everything turns out OK.  I will say that when I was pregnant with Tyler, my doctor told me they were going to do an u/s due to an earlier miscarriage, but he wouldn't schedule it before 6.5 weeks at the earliest, due to the likelihood of not being able to see much.  Hope it turns out the same for you.

  • Congrats!  I don't have any advice but I know when I had an u/s at 8 weeks with both of mine you could see stuff and the dr did say you don't see much too much earlier then that!  Good luck!  T&P's!!!

  • We only saw a sac with a 6w4d u/s with Owen. They thought I was 8 weeks-which I knew I wasn't,but they wanted the us to date the pregnancy based on my LMP. It was scary but all turned out well when we went back at around 8 weeks. I understand how stressful that is, try not to let your worries get too far ahead of you. Keep us posted! I'm thinking of you.
