How to properly mix rice cereal in formula bottle?

LO has been diagnosed with GERD since he was 3 weeks old. Our pediatrician yesterday said to start using rice cereal with his formula since he's been having issues recently with holding his food down.

Last night was the first time we added rice cereal (1 tablespoon to 4 oz formula) in his bottle. OMG, disaster. I filled the bottle with water, then added the rice cereal, shook it up for about a minute, and still didnt look like it dissolved.I thought perhaps that's fine, then I added formula powder and swirled it a little bit to get it all mixed up.

First of all, silly me..I had used a Level 1 nipple (with 4 extra holes poked out) and that didnt work. Then we use Level 2 (with no extra holes) and LO was still struggling to drink it. I took the Level 1 nipple and cut an X in the middle hole, and that helped. I think I cut it too big because it took LO all 2 minutes to finish the 4oz and he was gulping really fast. I was worried he was going to choke so we will not be using that Level 1 X nipple again.

What is the best way to dissolve the rice cereal with formula? Do I blend it? Mix it up and hold it for an hour so it will soften? Cut a Level 2 nipple with a smaller X?

What did you do?

  • Is it ok to cut holes in the nipples?  I have no clue.  But as for the mixing maybe you can use one of those formula hand mixer things...

You shouldn't cut the nipples. They make cereal nipples.

That's what I figured but I didn't want to say so if I wasn't 100% sure.  My friend pokes holes in her son's nipples and I told her not to do that and she got annoyed with me.  Oh well lol.

  • I had to start putting cereal in my LO's bottle at three weeks due to horrible reflux.  We put 1 tsp. of cereal for every ounce.  I put the cereal in when I put the formula in the water and shake it well and it works like a charm.  Also, the Level 2 nipples worked for us (I use Avent or Dr. Brown bottles).  At first I bought X or Y nipples but it came out way too quick and made a huge mess every time.  The level 2 have worked for us perfectly for almost three months now.  Good luck.
  • I put cereal in my LO's bottle for reflux as well since he was 10 weeks old.  Our pedi said we can mix 1 tablespoon per ounce up to 4.  I always warm water first then mix formula then add cereal and let it sit for a minute or two to thicken.  My son drinks 5 ounces of formula so I add 2.5 tablespoons and it is just the right thickness.  When he was on 4 ounces I only mixed 2 tablespoons.  I use Dr.Brown's bottles and they make a "Y" nipple for thick liquids.  I think all bottle brands make some sort of nipple for thick liquids.  I only thicken his evening feed since he is laying down for a long time, I didnt think he needed it during the day because he stays upright alot and milk doesnt come up too much.

Beware though, rice cereal tends to constipate.  You can add a teaspoon of dark karo syrup to 3 bottles a day.  The sugar helps loosen the stool.
