Sensitive skin and static cling question

I took DS in for his 15 month check up and found out he has senstive skin.  He has Eczema behind the knees.  I was told to use hypoallergenic laundry soap ( which I already do) and no dryer sheets.  What do you use to help with the static cling in dryer.  I have those blue dryer balls but they don't seem to work all that well somebody told me I need more of them (like 6).  I am just wondering what other Mama's use.

Thanks!

Re: Sensitive skin and static cling question

  • A lot of people use vinegar in the wash (more a fabric softener than static reducer, though), and/or wool balls in the dryer.

Making sure not to over-dry your clothes helps reduce static dramatically.  You can also wash synthetics separately since they dry faster than cotton, etc., and account for a lot of the static.

  • I've never used dryer sheets.  They're bad for your dryer and they coat your clothes with chemicals.   I have no problems with static.  We do have dryer balls.. .not sure if that's what helps.   The only thing I ever have issues with static on are things like slips or thin skirts or polyester.  But most of our clothes are jeans and tshirts.  :)

  • I haven't been able to use dryer sheets on my clothes for the past 20 years, and honestly, I have never noticed too much of a static cling problem!   If anything seems static-y when I take it out of the dryer I just shake it a few times and the problem seems to solve itself.   Good Luck!

  • We haven't used dryer sheets in over a year because Lucy started reacting to them. I honestly don't miss them at all and really don't have much of a problem with static cling at all.

  • We also stopped using them when baby came along.  Biggest thing I have an issue with with fleece jammies, so those get pulled into the fleece/sweatshirt load, instead of regular darks, even though they are light weight.  (and I hang all the fleece outerwear)

  • Thanks everyone.  I bought a few new dryer balls today and am trying them right now, hopefully that will do the trick.  The biggest issue is with my husbands shirts I hang them to dry and then put them in the dryer to get rid of the static.  Hopefully the dryer balls work for that as well or I will just have to use the dryer sheets for just his shirts.
  • there used to be some spray for static... I wonder if that still exists.   what kind of fabric are the shirts?
