Two Under 2

Anyone know a sanity saver to this one?

Clearly I have 2u2, and my DS (the new addition) will be 3 weeks tomorrow. Not sure if he's considerd colicky or not, but he certainly is a shrieker and sometimes it's hard to get him satisfied. Problem? My DD, 17 months old, can never stay sleeping while he has his crying bouts.

Any suggestions? We live in a small 2 bedroom apartment so pretty much no matter what she will hear him!

Most of the time she falls asleep with/on me, and he'll start crying right before I'm able to put her down in her bed. I find myself trying to 'baby juggle' and hold both of them but DD ends up hogging my entire body and therefore I get nervous she'll hurt DS. That and it's hard to breastfeed him and coddle a toddler at the same time.

Anyone going through the same thing?

  • Have you tried a sound machine?  I started using one when my LO's were babies, so I don't know if the white noise would bother your DD.  The machine "drowned out" the crying, and helped the older ones sleep peacefully (and comforted the baby as well).  If you can I'd work on getting your DD to go to sleep on her own as well, or at least next to you rather than on you, it might be easier if you have to jump up and grab/rock DS if he starts to cry.  GL!

  • We have a fan in dd's room that is always on to drown out the noise. Between that and keeping the door closed when she's asleep it works really well. Plus as they have gotten older they are more used to all the noise.

  • Another vote for white noise.

At one time we had the bathroom fan running, sound machines in each room (or a humidifier depending on the time of year) and a box fan randomly plugged in in the hall way running full blast.

Sounded like a train tunnel in our house during sleep times but it worked!

This!    Our DD had a sound machine and a fan in her room.   DS slept with music and a (loud) fan in his room until 3 years old.  They both still have fans in their rooms.
