If you get pedicures, do they use this tool?

image

It shaves off the skin.  I know they are outlawed on some states.  Curious to see if you let your pedicurist near you with one of these puppies.

Re: If you get pedicures, do they use this tool?

  • No, but my mom bought something similar for home use...

  • YES! I got a pedicure today and I went to a specific place because I knew they use them! I have such dry, cracked heels that I need it!

Why is it outlawed in some states? What is that tool called?

  • Hmm... I can't say that I've paid much attention, but thinking back, I think they always use either a file or pumice stone.

  • They've never used that when I've had a pedi, but I have one I use at home for DHs horrible calluses he gets on his big toes.

If not used properly they can cause serious cuts.  Also, there is some evidence (from what little I've read) that says the more aggressively you treat skin the more you skin grown back fast/hard/thick.

That makes sense. My heels get so cracked/rough that they actually hurt so that tool is my best friend lol.

  • I never let anyone use these on my feet!  They are impossible to disinfect, unless they actually put it in an autoclave (what they clean surgical instruments with), not just they thing with the UV bulb in it.

They are outlawed for this reason, also they can very easily cut your feet!

You are better off using a pumice stone regularly, along with a callus removing lotion.

They use it at my place too.  But my germaphobe personality is making me second guess going there because I don't want to get an infection when I am pregnant.  Totally irrational because the place I went to is always clean and has great ladies.  I know I can just ask them to not use it, but I wanted to see what other pregnant ladies though before I let my irrational fear get the best of me.  LOL!

The place I go to puts a new blade on in front of you. I don't know what they do to sanitize the rest of the instruments, though.  I also considered bringing in my own stuff.

  • Nope. I've never had it used on me...

I use a pumice stone at home so my feet aren't cracked/dry. I wonder if that's why I've never had it done?

  • They're called callous shavers, and they're basically a straight edge blade with a little guard on it. They can cut you pretty badly if not used correctly, actually.

They're illegal to use in nail salons here in FL.

  • Heck no! That thing looks painful. They use a pumice stone on mine.
  • Nope. Usually it's just a giant paddle that usually I then get offered to take home because they don't reuse them between clients. Only thing that is metal near my feet are clippers for nails.

Just tell them not to use it on you. I have seriously tried everything and that little tool is the only thing that helps. To each their own! :)

I'm pretty sure this is the same at the place I go.  They use a pumice stone and a file type thing with exfoliating scrub regularly.

I always get it when I'm not pregnant, it is a sick satisfaction thing for me.  I can see all the grossness they take off.  LOL!

  • Love it. I'm always asked if I want it used though- wherever I go.

FWIW- I use and have used pumice stones, pedi eggs, exfoiliating creams, peppermint lotions, paraffin dips, and everything else you could think of on my feet. Some people just have terrible feet and need those calluses razored off. Ha.

  • They are completely unsanitary! Most places do not change out the blade and even if they do then they most likely do not properly sterilize the rest of the instrument. We nneevveerr use them at my salon because for a few days or a week it makes the skin feel great but eventually makes it come back a lot worse!!! Any time you are peeling off skin (dead or not) its considered invasive and shouldn't be done. A lot of asian places like to clip the cuticle off with the nippers which is also illegal in a lot of states and HORRIBLE for the nail.

What is that bad for your nails?  The place I go to uses cream stuff and pushes them back, but you've peaked my interest.

  • Outlawed in CA for a few years now.
  • imagemelissa.1985:

Why is it outlawed in some states?

It's for sanitary reasons, I think they can spread bacteria if not cleaned well.

  • Can't quote from here but RE: cutting cuticles vs pushing them back:?

It makes them tougher and can also cause infection IIRC. I always push mine back because i'm too afraid to cut them.

I've never had them shave my feet, but then again my feet never get rough like that (I think I have mystic feet) My friend begged for it last time we went to get a pedicure and they refused to do it, saying its gross.

  • I have had it b4 in NY not here in CA...honestly sometimes I need it! H laughs at me b/c he has athletes that use them at work on their feet but I was weirded out at the idea of doing it yourself!

  • Heck Yeah they use it...I'm actually going to get one today (if OB allows)...I call it the "cheese grater" because that's what it reminds me of. My nail salon soaks theirs in the barbasol (that blue liquid that hair cutting places use for combs and stuff) and changes the blade regularly (I've seen them do it). They also use the pumice stone and limes in the water to make your feet nice and soft! They also use the cuticle clippers to get the extra dead skin away from the nail...they dont dig in or anything. I'm so ready to have mine done now, I'm practically drooling over it! Hope the OB says yes!

  • You cannot use them in MD but I love them. I am always barefoot or in flip flops and two things I have found that help are a.) Vicks vapor rub on your feet (got this from a podiatrist) and b.) footlogix dry skin anti-fungal formula. I buy it at red door spa but I think you can get it online. The footlogix really works. It is a bit pricey $32 a bottle - but it makes a HUGE difference.
