Trouble TTC

Elevated estradiol levels?

I'm new to the board and have a question about my recent blood work.

What does elevated estradiol levels mean? This is the first time it's shown elevated and I don't have my consult with my RE until later this week.  I tried googling, but didn't find much.  Nurse just said don't take Clomid this cycle...I was supposed to start it tomorrow morning.

Also she mentioned a 2mm cyst on the right ovary, but again, couldn't answer any of my questions because I needed to wait for my consult.

Thanks!

If you have a cyst and your e2 is elevated, it is probably because the cyst is producing estrogen.  You will need to wait until your cyst goes away or start medications to help your cyst go away (BCPs, aygestin, lupron, etc.).

  • I would think if my cycle would be cancelled, they wouldn't be rushing us in to do our bloodwork/urine tests that are required before an IUI. We had them scheduled for Saturday and the nurse called today to move them to tomorrow morning. Since it'll take a couple days to get tomorrow's results back, the RE is waiting to discuss everything all at once at the follow-up appointment with me.

I've never had a urine test with an IUI.  What are they testing for?

I'm not sure if we have enough information here.  If your E2 was elevated before your cycle started and you have a cyst, you probably have an estrogen producing cyst and your probably shouldn't be on stim meds (they can make the cyst grow and estrogen producing cysts can keep you from ovulating and cause other issues).  If you are currently cycling and your E2 is elevated it could mean you are responding more than normal to stim meds.  There are also other things that can cause E2 to be elevated.

From your initial post, it sounded like you hadn't started your medicated cycle, your E2 was elevated and you had a cyst.  If that is the case, I wouldn't think they would be preparing for an IUI.

I don't remember what it's for...but H is getting the same tests done tomorrow. It's required of all their patients prior to the first IUI.

Our plan was that the first 2 rounds were going to be Clomid/IUI. I took Provera for 10 days and CD1 was Saturday. I went for CD3 blood work and ultrasound on Monday morning. I was supposed to start taking Clomid starting tomorrow (CD5), but now I'm not due to the elevated estradiol level and 2mm cyst. That's all the nurse would tell me.

Nurse said today that IUI could be as early as Tues, which is why we are re-scheduled for the required blood work tomorrow morning instead of Saturday. 10 am on Saturday is much nicer than 7 am tomorrow! :-)  It switched from a lab to their in-house lab to get the results back faster.

This is all new, so I don't really know what to expect. But I don't understand why they'd push up our blood work if they were having us wait a cycle with IUI.  I guess I'll know the plan after my consult with the RE, most likely on Friday. The nurse will call when the lab results are back to schedule it.
