eacerna (and anyone else) - one month gymboree for $39 - yay or nay?

you did the gymboree deal, right?  did you like it?  how exactly does it work - one month membership, and you can take unlimited classes and go to open gym?  since we can probably on go once/week, is it still worth it?

thanks!

  • The fee covers one class per month. You also have access to all the open gym time, but I don't often see younger babies taking advantage of that.

So, I think a definite YAY for active crawlers and walkers. We go to a music class once a week and then go to open gym times once or twice a week more. I signed up a couple months ago for two reason -- for social time with other kids and so that he'd have a safe place to roam freely. It's worked out really well for us, even at $80/month. We've even made a new play date friend, which is a nice bonus.

There are a lot of kids who sign up at younger ages, and I know many parents who really like it for the interaction time with their LOs. But, personally, I'm glad I waited because now he gets to take advantage of the gym time too. Paying the monthly fee for just one class a week is steep, I think. But being able to go a few times a week to free play really helps make the cost per visit affordable.

If it's just $39/month, why not try it? My contract asks for a 3-month commitment, though, so I'm not sure if they'd expect you to pay full price for a couple more months. Good luck!

  • For me, it was worth it. We actually paid $75 per month so $39/month is a good deal! You have to sign up for at least 2 months though. I signed up for one month but they need 30 days notice before you cancel (they bill you for one more month when they receive your cancellation request). We did Gymboree during the last month of my maternity leave. I wish we started sooner though so E could've enjoyed it more. E was only 3 months old when we started going. Each class is geared towards their age group (since your E is almost 6 months old, he can probably join the Level 2 class; we went to Level 1). I wanted to have something fun to do with E before my maternity leave ended plus use it as an excuse to get out of the house (it was towards the end of winter so getting out of the house was still a pain). The class gave me ideas on types of "play" I can do with E which could help enhance her development. I don't know a lot of kids songs so I learned a lot from the class too. E still remembers the songs until now. Whenever I sing them to her, she gives out a big smile. It was also a good time for E to socialize with other babies. I was trying to slowly "break her in" since she was gonna start daycare. I did not want her to freak out at day care when she sees other babies or other people lol.

With the monthly fee, you are signed up for one class a week. You pick a day when you can go. Not sure if it was just the teacher in E's class or they have the same policy across the board, but her teacher told me I can also go to same class on other days if I want to. They're pretty lax on that, at least in the Gymboree we go to. They have a pretty liberal make up policy as well. If you miss your class, you are welcome to attend the same class on another day. The classes are never full so I don't think they mind having another participant. Also, I have seen dads and grandparents bring the babies to class. I have only been to one weekend class but I heard more dads go to weekend classes. Perhaps your dad can take E there during the week for open gym? We've only taken advantage of the open gym two times. Although E does not crawl or walk yet, she loved it. DH took her to open gym when he was off work a few weeks ago. Granted he was the only dad among the stay at home moms with their babies at open gym, but he did not mind Stick out tongue.  I suggest that you go to the free preview class and see if Eric likes it. If you see that E does, it may be easier for you to decide Stick out tongue.

Here are some of E's photos at Gymboree

    HTH!

Good point. I also love that anyone can take baby to the class or open gym time. I take A to music class and DH takes him to the gym on the weekend. Sometimes my mom will take him to open gym, too. They are really family friendly there!

  • hrm...maybe we should go to a free class this weekend and then decide - i think the deal is good until then.  thanks for the feedback!  i didn't realize it was only for 1 class.  i guess you pay separately if you want to take other classes?

and good suggestion about my dad taking him!  that would be a fun thing for them to do Smile

Yep. I think at ours you get 30% off a second class, but only if you sign up within the first month or something. That'd be like $140/month total! Embarrassed
