I was at my parents house last week and my Dad showed me some old census records he'd found online.
In 1910, there was an outbreak of diptheria in our hometown. His grandparents lost four children between Nov. 23 - Dec. 11. They were age 6, 8, 10 & 12.
He told me that his mother would tell him about how the house was quarantined, the door was nailed shut. So the father had to build the coffins in the house, put the child inside, and pass it out through the window for burial.
I've often heard that the rise in anti-vax comes from the fact that we're not as afraid of these diseases as our parents were. My dad lost four aunts/uncles to diptheria, so he wanted us vaccinated. My mom remembers one year as a child when her summer vacation was extended because there was so much polio around that they were afraid to put large numbers of children in school together.
It's all only a generation or two away from us. That's too close for me. Oh, and there's autism in my family (my late brother), but I'm still taking J for his 6 month shots tomorrow.
Re: A little off-topic, vax-related
So sad, I can't even imagine going through that.
My FIL had polio as a child, I think if I ever told him we weren't vaccinating our children he'd cut us off.
I am getting Remy vaccinated, but we are on a delayed vaccination schedule. We too have autism in my family (3 of my cousins) and so it worries me. I am mostly waiting till Remy's body is a little stronger to deal with the symptoms of vaccination more than anything. I don't agree with people NOT vaccinating, but I think they could wait a year or even 2. We will be getting them at a year.
EDIT: I wanted to add that I think ones like for chicken pox are a little silly. I had them as a child. But I know as an adult it is dangerous. I am still deciding on this one.
I always thought the chicken pox vaccine was a little over-board myself, but in the last 5 years I have known at least 20 people (myself and husband included) who have had shingles. The case I had was mild, but my husband's was more severe and the blisters scarred his skin from the center of his chest to his back. He was in an extreme amount of pain and since he comes into contact with a lot of people for his job, he was unable to work for almost a month.
I had shingles that was brought one by A LOT of stress at the beginning of my pregnancy. I still think it's a little overboard, though I understand the want for it.
I just don't understand why people are so scared of EVERYTHING. I understand serious diseases... Even the Flu shot if you are vulnerable... But every single time I get the flu shot, I have gotten the flu. Same with my husband and he HAS to get it because of the military.
I do think the fear of catching something scares more people then anything, but I do believe that vaccines are important. But so is your child's ability to have a natural immunity to things.
I see my husband get all these vaccines including anthrax and I feel so bad for him. I am glad that it's not me having to get them.
Just curious- how do you KNOW you had the flu? Were you tested for the flu virus?
Within a week of getting the vaccine (only 3 times since I was 12) I have had to go to the doctor and get medication for yes, having the actual, awesome flu.
Didn't they prove all of that autism stuff was a hoax?
Sorry- I wasn't trying to be snarky. I just hear a lot of people saying "I got the flu after the flu shot" and they really had a sinus infection, or a stomach virus. One of my biggest pet peeves is those who think the flu shot is for the "stomach flu".
Yes. And the hokey paper that was originally published about it has been retracted, so why this "vax = autism" topic is still floating around defies logic.
But the flu shot has an inactivated/dead flu virus in it. Only the nasal flu spray has the live virus. The flu can have an incubation period of about a week, so chances are that you had already contracted the flu before you got the shot.
and Sarah, having Remy on a delayed vax schedule isn't going to prevent him from getting the Autism that runs in your family because VACCINATIONS DON'T CAUSE AUTISM.
AMEN.
My mom was hospitalized with whooping cough as a kid. This is one of those diseases that is on the rise again because of the whole "Well, I won't get my kid vaccinated but they'll be fine because of herd immunity."
Alos, my pedi won't keep you as a client if you don't vaccinate nor will he do a delayed schedule, because even that puts your baby at risk.
