Breast Pumps which is best?

I have the option to either get a Medela Pump In Style or an Ameda Purely Yours dual electric pump once my baby is here (like a week or two from now). I have no clue which one is better and nobody to ask personally. I will be returning to work about 6-8 weeks after the little guy is born as long as all goes well. Ideally the pump will be quick and efficient, easy to transport and quiet. I will need to pump in the public bathroom at work once I go back... bummer, I know. Please give me any feedback possible. The reviews on the internet are so wide ranging that they are not helping much at all. I also want the pump to be compatible with storing pumped milk in the freezer for when I'm away at work and Daddy is home with the baby.

Thanks for the help!!

Re: Breast Pumps which is best?

  • I absolutely love my Medela PISA and everyone I have talked to that used it feels the same way. Not a single complaint. Also, their customer service is great! About a year ago I had some problems with the motor and they sent me a complimentary brand new pump and paid for shipping both ways.

  • I'm going to kill PP's record (sorry) and complain about the Medela. I was part of the recall they had that involved the motor losing suction, and although they were incredibly fast about getting me a new pump (I always had one the next day) their customer service reps gave me attitude each time and I had to go through 2 new pumps. The last pump they sent me still doesn't work right, but I gave up and I'm now renting a hospital grade pump to get me through to the one year mark. Medela's are also an open-system pump, which means that milk or water can get into the motor...and mold there or do whatever water does to a motor. Ameda is a closed system pump and does not have this problem.

I wish I would've bought an Ameda, if I have another child I will buy an Ameda. I have friends who have it and love it. That being said, Medela is the most popular brand out there. It is going to be easiest to find replacement parts/tubing/etc. for the Medela.

Both pumps are compatible with storing milk in the freezer.

  • I bought the Ameda from Albee Baby and it worked great.  It took a lot of abuse and still worked great.  I plan on using it again in a few months.

I think more people go for the other brand because they are in the stores and easier to purchase, but after reviews and cost I liked my choice.

Also- once you get the hang of a pump you will "like" it.   Rarely are you going to find someone that has used multiple pumps so it is hard to get a good read on which is "better".

I too love my Medela PISA. It's great. Also the hospital I delivered at has Medelas so I was able to get extra parts and supplies for my PISA after I had my baby.

I've been exclusively pumping for my daughter for 13+ months and haven't had any issues with my Medela Pump in Style and would recommend that one. I'm not familar with the other one you mentioned but all of my friends have had the Medela and have been happy with it too.

ETA: Also, if you get the Medela you can buy the $1 gerber bottles they sell at Target and they will work with the pump and the medela lids. I think the Medela bottles are $16 for 3 bottles/lids so $3 for 3 Gerber bottles is great if you end up wanting more storing bottles.

I cannot comment on which breast pump is best as I haven't used mine yet (I got the Medela Freestyle), but your work is required by law to give you a private place to pump.

  • while I personally haven't used both, my mom's neighbor exclusively pumped for 6 months and had both the Medela PIS and the Ameda Purely Yours (which I borrowed for awhile); she preferred the Ameda. It was also pretty easy to find replacement parts (I bought new tubing when I borrowed it). I hate pumping no matter what I use, but the fact that she tried both may help you in deciding.
