Be careful what you ask for

This is too funny and disturbing for me not to share.

I had my gallbladder removed a couple weeks ago. While in surgery before my send off to la-la land, I must have been very adamant with the surgeon that I get to have the stones post surgery (I wanted to see the little buggers that were causing me all that pain. I wasn't going to string them on a necklace or anything - honest).

I remember my Grandpa was given his in a nice little jar and I wanted the same experience.

Yesterday I was at the hospital for my post-op appointment, so afterwards I wandered on over to the pathology department and picked up my specimen. I was handed a bag with a jar that seemed very heavy to just be gallstones. As I carried it to the car I kept thinking...wow, this is heavy, there must be tons of stones in there.

When I got into my car, I peeked inside and noticed it was a large-ish mass of something floating in a jar of liquid (cue a vision of Anton Jackson of In Living Color's "personal facilities".)

I was horrified when I pulled out the jar and saw it wasn't just my stones but my actual, frickin' gallbladder floating in a jar of formaldehyde.

I was so disgusted I started crying and then I was a bit embarrassed by the fact that I was just handed one of my organs by a lab tech who must have thought that I was some kind of sick weirdo who wanted my little treasure for my fireplace mantel.

I made DH throw it away as soon as I got home. Gross.

I need someone to laugh at this so I don't feel like a total wacko. Anyone?

  • I think it's hilarious and your subject line says it all.  I can't decide which is funnier, the fact that you started crying, or that you made your DH throw it away  :)

I actually thought this was going to have a worse ending, like you had someone else's something-or-other organ.  Thank goodness it wasn't anything like that.

  • HAHAHAHA!  Bless your heart.  I would have wanted my stones too.  And I think it would be neat to see the gallbladder.  Sorry you didn't get what you asked for!

  • Oh, Tosha, I am giggling away, and Ethan is laughing too because I can't control it.  Many wishes for a happy tummy now that the pesky gall bladder is gone!!

  • Too Funny!  :)

I didn't ask for my stones last week.  Hope your are healing well.  I am still a bit sore, but getting around.  Kinda weird and funny that we both had Gallstones and surgery within days of eachother  :)

  • I love it.

You could have buried it under a tree in your yard and had a little ceremony :)

  • This could have been a PIP history-making moment.
  • Hahaha! Thanks! I definitely needed that today. I think I probably would have screamed and thrown it out the window. That would have freaked me out!

  • Oh man, what a story!  I can understand being interested in seeing the stones but the whole organ - um, no thanks!  Thanks for the laugh :)
  • I just read it again and then made Jeremy come down so I could read it to him too.
