VBAC

Successful VBAC Went Better Than Imagined!

Here's my quick background: I had a planned c/s with DD#1 because my dr. said she was too big and that if she induced me it would end in an emergency c/s. I trusted her and did it even though I should have gotten a 2nd opinion. So I'd never been through labor at all and never even felt a single contraction that entire pg.

And now for this pg: My EDD was 4/2. On 4/3 I finally started having contractions, but they were only BH. Those continued for several days. Early Tuesday morning, they started getting closer together until they were 4-5 min. apart. At this point, I thought they were the real thing and would just get more intense. Instead they just got further apart again. I went to my dr. office since I had an appt. scheduled for that day anyway. She checked and I was 2-3 cm and 80-90% effaced. She also said the baby was quite a bit lower than she'd been the week before. The dr.'s recommendation was to schedule me for an induction the next morning at 7 am, and she felt I had a great chance of success. After having contractions for 5 days straight at this point, I was ok with that since she was leaving to go out of town soon anyway.

Luckily, my LO decided to beat the induction deadline and at 1am Wednesday morning (4/6), the contractions were definitely more intense than the day before and starting to get closer together. By 3am, I couldn't take it anymore and got up to move around the house. We checked into the hospital by 4:45am. When the nurse checked me about 5:30am, I was 4 cm and 95% effaced. I was anxious to get my epi at this point so I could try to get some rest because I thought we had a long day ahead of us. Got my epi about 6:30am. My dr. came and broke my water around 7:30 am and was started on a very tiny amount of pitocin. At that point I was 5.5 cm. When the nurse checked me again about 9am, I was 9cm! I was as shocked as she was since this was really a first time labor for me. About 20-30 minutes later when she checked me again, I was complete. They didn't want me to have to push for very long, so we waited a few minutes for the baby to come down and for my dr. to get there. I started pushing at 10:10am, and she was born just under 20 min. later! I couldn't believe how fast everything went. It was the most beautiful and amazing experience ever. It wasn't painful at all, and I only tore in 1 small spot (2nd degree).

I couldn't believe how great I felt afterward compared to my c/s. I even went home only 34 hrs after I initially checked into the hospital because I felt so great. I am so glad I chose to try a VBAC and hope I am able to do it again if we have another one someday.
