5 months pregnant and job interview

I just got a call from the college I used to work for about a job interview for a great position.  I am 20 weeks pregnant and am not really obviously showing especially in work clothes.  Would you tell them you were pregnant in the interview or wait until you got an official offer?

Re: 5 months pregnant and job interview

  • I'd wait till I got the offer. They can't take it back then just because you are pregnant and then you can work out contractual issues like maternity leave - paid, etc.

  • You don't need to tell them. I work in HR. BUT... if you start a new postiion right now, you will not be under FMLA, which means, they legally won't have to have a job for you when you come back. To qualify for FMLA you have to work for the company for 1250 hours in the last year, and you won't be there for a year before you go on leave. It's worth going to the interview for and then deciding if it comes to making a decision! Good luck!

I agree with this. YOu won't be eligible for FMLA however you never know if the companies policy is more generous or not. I would suggest waiting until you get the offer, tell them and also make sure you get what their policy is before you accept or not. A friend of mine was interviewing, got a job offer and the same day she got the offer she found out she was pregnant. She didn't feel right not telling them about it so she told them. They reviewed their policies with her and she found out that because she wouldn't be eligible for FMLA then she also wouldn't be eligible for any paid leave at all. For her this wasn't worth it so she decided not to accept the position.

  • Thanks, I knew about the FMLA, but in terms of paid leave I would only get about 3 weeks at my current job so it would not much of a difference starting a new one.  I am hoping to negotiate unpaid leave at the new position (thinking positively).  I have been applying to jobs at this college for the past 2 years and this is my first interview, I am beyond excited!

This is what I would do. A friend of mine got a new job at 29 weeks and she negotiated 6 weeks of unpaid maternity leave and the security of having her job when she returned.

  • Wait until you get an offer.

Most colleges have a very family-friendly atmosphere, so they will most likely be understanding and helpful as long as you communicate a dedication to the position and a carefully considered plan for maternity leave, which I'm sure you will.  Good luck!

  • Also, most colleges have very, very generous leave benefits.  You still will not qualify for FMLA, but as long as your supervisor is supportive, you should be able to get at least some paid time off, though it may not be as much as you'd want.
  • Something similar to this happened to me. I found out I was pregnant the day after my interview. I was offered the position and accepted it. I told them my second day there. My job requires a 3 month probationary period.  I told my supervisor and she was very supportive. I work as a teaching assistant with kids with autism so there are some kids who I can't work with. All in all my pregnancy hasn't interfered with anything else with my job. They are really happy with me. I don't qualify for FMLA so we are trying to figure out how i will take time of since I can't take any time off according to my contract. They are thinking that the only way would be to terminate and rehire me. This way I would qualify for unemployment and they guarantee my job. I would go to the interview and wait for the offer. Then disclose the pregnancy although legally you are not required to. Discuss your options. The worse thing that could happen is you deciding its not right for you. Give it a chance. Good Luck
