First ultrasound appointment set and flying while pregnant

Yey! I set up my first ultrasound appointment today for the 27th. Can't wait!! I hope we can hear the heartbeat then.I should be just over 7 weeks then.

I'm also flying to visit my family and surprise them, and tell them the news. It's gonna be a surprise. I hope that flying will not hurt the baby. The doctor said to just make sure i walk on the plane every couple hours, so I don't feel sick and get blood clots in my legs. Anyone else fly during pregnancy?

  • You can definetly fly this early. I don't see how it could hurt the baby.

  • I've taken about 5 trips since getting my BPF.  Have another one this week.  (I travel a lot for work)

  • My SIL will be 8 mo. pregnant and flying back from tChad to the US. Not the safest plan (she really didn't have many options) but just saying you'll totally fine.

I fly (a lot) for work and here's what I did. Take it for what it's worth.

If you get m/s flying might make it worse. I'd try to get a seat near the back of the plane in case of bathroom emergencies (those damn drink carts are impossible to get around in emergencies). If smells make it worse bring minty lotion (or some other, agreable scent you can discreetly put near your nose). Also, when you sit down, double check that there's a puke bag (I flew with my own). Pack a snack if food helps with m/s and buy the big thing of water in the airport (another reason to sit near the bathroom).

As for getting up and walking - do it cause it feels good - but unless you're on a 4+ hour flight I really wouldn't over-plan/stress it.

  • I'm flying this weekend with my 16 month old by myself (no hubby this weekend), and I'm not at all worried about it. I do think bathroom trips could be interesting, but we'll make it work.

  • I am 16 weeks and just got back from a Business trip in San Francisco. I was not instructed to get up and walk.. If I had been told that I would have gotten my butt off the seat instead of sleeping the 6 hours.

  • I flew at 12-13 weeks and 24-25 weeks in my first pregnancy.  I flew at 8-9 weeks and 35-36 weeks in my second pregnancy (this I do not recommend and the danger there is possibly going into labor on the plane).  And I flew two days after I found out I was pregnant this time and again two weeks later.  It's fine.  Just drink lots of water and stretch your legs.

    Me too!

  • I flew quite a bit during my pregnancy with my son.  All three trimesters actually, until I was about 36 weeks.  No problems whatsoever, except a little swelling toward the end.  Drinking a lot of water helps with swelling, but this early it shouldn't be a problem!  Have a safe trip and enjoy the announcing.  Sounds fun!

  • I am currently in Las Vegas for business, flew here direct from Boston. 6 Hour flight and my doctor instructed me to get up and try to walk or just keep moving my legs and stretch every so often. It worked for me fine, I only got up once and moved around a couple times every hour. Definitley get a big water and bring some snacks you'll be good to go! Have fun telling your family!

  • At first I thought this was a joke. The onlyt ime they tell you not to fly is after 36 weeks when you have a legitimate possibility of going into labor. How on earth would flying hurt the baby??

Yup!  We left on a trip to Europe the day we got our BFP.  9 hours there, and about 13 hours home.  Eep!

Anyway, it was fine.  I  had healthier snacks and lots of water, and did laps around the plane when I was feeling restless.
