Daycare waitlist RAGE

My DH is a about to graduate from med school in May, and for those who don't know this process, all 4th year med students find out on the same day in March where they get jobs for the following year. This is called "matching" and that particular day is Match Day. We matched in New Orleans, and they kept telling us how they have TWO day cares, and everyone goes there, blah blah blah, and before we matched I talked to the day care and they said to wait to get on the waitlist until we matched. Well, I just talked to them again today and they said they have no spaces for the fall, at least till next spring! I told them it was hard since we had no control over when we can get on the list, and it was sold to us a perk, and the woman says "I know everyone is calling and is so mad." NO SH&%!!!!! I'm not usually for special treatment but I honestly think we should get special consideration because of the way the whole Match process works. Its a nationally set schedule. I feel lied to, pissed, and angry because now I don't know where I will put my baby for daycare!

Re: Daycare waitlist RAGE

  • I'm trying but we aren't moving down there till June and I don't feel comfortable with something like that till I can see it myself. The university day care was also very very affordable- $700/mth! I bet it will be double that someplace else. RAGE!

  • I feel your pain! dh and I are both residents so I understand how difficult the process can be! Good luck!

  • Honestly, I can see the daycare's point of view on this.  They can't have people adding their names to a wait list when the parents may not even end up living in that city.  This is just a frustrating part of the match process, but it's not the fault of the daycare.  Plus, there are going to be plenty of child care options in New Orleans.  I'm sure you will find an option that works for your family, and this really isn't something to get enraged over.  Go ahead and get on the list for the spring, so if you don't like your other options as much, you can switch to the Tulane daycare in the spring.  However, there's a good chance that you'll find another daycare you like so much that you won't even want to switch.
  • I don't understand, match day was almost a month ago, so why did you wait until today to call?
  • Ahh, I remember Match Day(s) well. DH had to match for both residency and fellowship, so we have been through that twice. It's definitely stressful! We didn't have kids then, but I can only imagine how tough that would be. No advice for the daycare situation, but good luck with everything! It's a long road.

  • Check to see if the hospital your DH is going to has an EAP (Employee Assistance Program) that can help give you a list of reputable daycares in the area, also check the local board down there for recs.   Dont stress about pricing yet, you may find something reasonable.  We are paying 220 a week for a great daycare in Chicago which is pretty darned cheap here (most are more like 300-400) so you may luck out and find a great place that is still reasonable.  GL!

I was trying to figure out some job stuff for myself. It turns out it wouldn't have mattered even I had called on Match Day.

  • I understand you're irritated, but like a PP said, think about how the daycare feels. And how their "normal" parents feel about people being matched and just thinking their kids should get in. The center I worked at had to deal with that all the time because of flippin Mayo Clinic and seriously, nothing against doctors or students or anything, but calling and acting like you're entitled to a spot or something is pretty enraging to the daycare staff also.

I'm calling BS on that.  That's less than $40 a week per child.
