When did you introduce a sippy?

Just wondering because as I was looking at BRU the other day I noticed that some of the sippys say 4+ months!  I thought this was way early, but thought I'd ask you "seasoned" ladies!

Re: When did you introduce a sippy?

  • Not until after we introduced solids. Our pediatrician recommended we wait until 6 months for solids. G seemed ready prior to that so we went ahead and did a little rice cereal around 5 months. Even then we didn't give a sippy, I'm pretty sure we held off until 6-7 months for that and we still only give him water in it.

Many of the cups say 4+ months because it used to be the standard recommendation to give solids starting at 4 months and some pediatricians still go by that guideline. Generally speaking once you start giving solids you want to introduce the idea of drinking a little water with each "meal."

  • We started offering a sippy of water around 4.5 months.  Our DS was very ahead of the game with sippys from this, and I EBF, and hardly ever gave him bottles.

Ahh...makes sense now!  I guess we will see what our pedi says about solids in a few weeks.  Thank you!

  • E started with a sippy around 9-10 months. DCP would give her one at snack time. Mainly she just played with it in the beginning, but as she got closer to 12 months, she would start drinking from it. She was officially on a sippy and no bottle at 12 months +1 day.
  • We gave him a sippy of water right when we started solids so between 5-6 months.  He would just play with it in the beginning but soon figured out how to drink water from it.

  • We gave it to him with his first solids.  Sippies were for water for a long time.
  • We just started solids last week, so we'll probably introduce a sippy soon.  We had DS's 6mo check-up yesterday and their newsletter said they could have 2-4oz of water a day, so we'll see how he does with it.
  • Thanks so much ladies...I knew I could count on you all!  We have J's 4 month check up in a few weeks so we'll be sure to ask about solids and the sippy with water then.

  • We did it fairly early, I want to say around 4-5 months because with both kids they were always grabbing my water bottle and wanting to drink from it.  In the beginning I also used to freeze it with a little water in the spout part to use as a teething tool.  Neither of my boys ever gave a rats ass about freezable teethers but they loved frozen spout sippiesBig Smile.

I say that like most things you'll know when your kid is ready.

  • I gave him one (with just water) when we started rice cereal, I think that was about 5 months. I don't think he really "got it" until 7 months maybe.

  • We introduced a sippy at 6 months.  But DS only started really drinking from it at 9.5 months.  Before he would just chew on the spout.
