NBR: Ana White fans come in please!

I want (DH) to build these cubbies for our toy room and for Griffin's new room.  But, we went to Home Depot recently to price the lumber and it is looking like these are not going to be any cheaper than going to Ikea and getting their expedit system and putting canvas bins in it.  I like Ana's plan for these better than the one sold at Ikea and Target since it looks built-in and like furniture, but I don't want to pay an astronomical price to put 2 sets of these together.  She says in the details that these were compared to Ikea's version and that she could put them together for way cheaper, but I am not seeing it.  I'm not sure where she gets her lumber, but it isn't Home Depot!

Any Ideas?  Anyone used one of her plans?

  • Sorry, I can't be of any help in regards to where to get cheaper lumber.  But, I love these shelves too!  I may just be sleep deprived, but is it me or did she not post the plans she referenced with the added countertops and trim to make them look like built-ins?  I only see plans for the wheeled version???

That is so weird that she references plans with countertops/trim and then posts just the wheeled version.  Maybe I should comment on her page to see if anyone has the plans?

  • I'm not much help on the prices of lumber, but my dad just went to Hyde Park lumber to get some sheets of Birch for building some built in book shelves and I know they were about $20/sheet cheaper than where ever they had been getting them before. Maybe you could try there?

Plus Hyde Park lumber has some awesome decorative pieces that could break the bank!

  • There is a new Menard's in Fairfield Township and their prices have seemed very reasonable on other things, although we haven't priced lumber there.  My husband's boss bought all the materials to frame and finish his basement there and he seemed to get a ton for his money there.  It's a nice new store to explore and they have an enclosed play area for the kids, so nice for a rainy day :)

The only plan that I have built is the pallet bookshelves for Ethan's room, and I got the pallet free from work.  I have quite the list that we would like to do this summer though!

  • My H built the little helper's tower for our DD. It cost a little bit more than stated on her blog, but otherwise was pretty close in price. He bought all his material at Lowes.
