Questions from Aug 2011 mom - I wish I registered for ...

Hi Ladies! I am 1/2 baked and getting my registry together. I have Baby Bargains, lucie's list and amazon reviews to go off of so far, but your advice is appreciated!

What do you wish you registered for now thta your lo is here? Was there a big miss on your lists? Did you pick something of one brand and wish now you selected another brand? Thanks a bunch!!

  • I wish I registered for bottles, blankets, burp cloths, the normal stuff. I wrongly assumed that people just knew you needed that stuff because everyone gets a ton at showers. Well I think they all get a ton because they register for it.

  • I wish I registered for some stuff that i THOUGHT i had as hand-me-downs. I was given a bunch of things from my family as hand-me-downs, so i didn't register for them. When it got closer to LO's arrival and I was going through everything i found out many of the hand-me-downs were crap and didn't work. Sweet.

  • More Aden & Anais swaddle blankets- LOVE those.  More prefold diapers (for CDs but also we use them most often for burp cloths), pacifiers & paci clips (we didn't plan on using pacis until we were told it would help with his reflux), more footed sleepers- I didn't register for any clothes for him, because I purchased a bunch of cute outfits, when really all we use at home are footed sleepers (I like both the snap and zip kinds, both have their benefits, but I REALLY like the kind that have built in mittens for when DS is sleeping).  Lastly, more infant hats.  I didn't think about how cold it was when we had DS and how having a hat on would really make more sense, even in our house.

  • Pick up the book "Baby Bargains."  It REALLY helps to narrow down things, especially the big items.  I've liked everything that I got from their recommendations.

I wish that I DIDN'T register for bibs and blankets because I now have an S ton of them

  • Graco Snugrider! We have a Stokke stroller but for short trips the snugrider is perfect-- one of the first things I bought after she was born.
  • Wish: I wish we got more Halo Swaddle sleep sacks. They are great. So easy to use and it keeps DD warm and her arms are swaddled so they don't wake her.
Miss: The Miracle blanket. It is great if you are extremely dedicated to swaddling. I didn't like it because at 1 am after a feeding, it's a huge pain reswaddling DD. It always wakes her up and makes it harder to get her back to sleep. We also got a wipe warmer as a gift and immediately returned it. I didn't want to have to clean it, refill it etc. Too much work. DD has been just fine with regular non-heated wipes. Lastly recieving blankets were a complete waste. We have never used them.
I too read tons of reviews and did a lot of research on brands and products. We are happy with everything else we got and use. Good luck and congrats!

  • Get yourself a Moby Wrap, so you can carry your LO around with you when they're being extra fussy and you need to get things done around the house. A bouncy chair might just save your sanity. Lots of diapers ( sz. Newborn and sz.1 ) and wipes. Don't forget a tummy mat, we just got the Lamaze Space Symphony Motion Gym and it's awesome.

  • Burp rags- Use cloth diapers- they seem to be the most absorbent.

I LOVE our diaper genie (some people hate them).

Bottles!!! If you're going to FF you'll go through at least 8 in a day at first. Get the larger ones because the small ones you'll only use for a month or 2 before they'll take more ounces. I LOVE our Avent bottles- we tried several brands that made LO sooo gassy and he would scream in pain, but not with the Avent bottles.

Wipes- You'll go through them QUICK!

    Waterproof lap pads/changing table pads

Sleep gowns- so nice for easy middle of the night changes!

I'm sure there's lots more, but those are a good start to a few of the things we love.  :) Good luck!

  • Hmm, very few people purchased from our registry so it didn't matter how much thought we put into things, we ended up with a million small receiving blankets and socks. Not the white noise machine, bottles, diapers, etc. At least you get your completion discount!

  • Congrats on having an August baby...my older daughter was born on August 12.  They are the best....although it was incredibly hot the day I delivered :)

    As far as registering....

Aden and Anais blankets (they are the best for multi use including swaddling...especially in the summer months)

I didnt register for them...and wish i had.

    DD (8/12/09), DD (2/8/11)

  • I don't think it would have mattered much because a lot of people ignore the registry and buy what they want anyway. That said, I would have registered for more Miracle Blankets and Halo Sleep Sacks, the Fisher Price Rock n Play, more Aden and Anais swaddle blankets, and MAM pacifiers. The best advice I can give is keep the tags, save any receipts, and don't feel guilty if you have to return a million outfits and blankets to exchange them for more practical items.

  • Pacifiers, bottles, packs of pj's that zip and not snap (way easier at 3am diaper changes), we had practically nothing size newborn for clothing they were all 0-3 and huge on LO for 6+weeks, more NB sized diapers, halo sleep sacks, more aden + anias swaddle blankets, bumbo chair, play gym mat, white noise or nature/music sound machine for sleeping.

  • With things like bottles and pacifiers, I would buy one or two in a variety of brands.  You don't know what LO will like so this will give you a variety to try.  We went through at least four different bottles before we found one LO liked.

Also, I wouldn't necessarily go buying a bunch of the 8oz bottles right away.  I know it doesn't always happen, and perhaps I'm case specific, but my LO is still using the 4oz bottles.  She's at about 3 1/2oz now.  She is/was a preemie so we've gotten a lot more use out of them than a lot of people.  In fact, if I'd realized in the beginning that there were 2oz bottles I might have bought those, too, since when she first came home she wasn't even eating 2oz at a time.  Just something to keep in mind.

  • The Sleep Sheep, more bottles (only bought a few thinking I'd BF for a while...), diaper rash cream, soothies like they give LO in the hospital, and TONS of wipes.

  • This is kind of small and silly, but washable nursing pads.  I registered for disposable ones, quickly realized how quickly I would go through them, and bought several boxes of washables.  I like the washables better anyway, they don't bunch up as much and the adhesive on the disposables doesn't work anyway.

A few things we registered for and loved: Babytrend Snap-and-go stroller (rather than a travel system).  Everytime we go out we comment on what a smart decision it was, it's so light and easy to open/close!  SwaddleMe wraps have helped with nighttime and naps.  I was sceptical about the Diaper Genie at first, but it's great for bedroom diaper changes where we don't take out the trash often.

    • Nosefrida Nasal Aspirator--all of the other ones are crap and don't work.
    • Little Noses Saline Spray-makes getting snot out way easier
    • California Baby wash and sun screen
    • Ergo Carrier WITH the infant insert so your hands aren't tied up all day
    • If you live in a multi-level house and are breastfeeding, it helps to have more than one Boppy
    • Baby nail files--way easier than clipping those little things and way safer too
    • Popular baby toys--Sophie the Giraffe, the peacock and firefly made by Lamaze, a baby mirror
    • A "shower cap" car seat cover
    • MAM pacifiers-the Soothies are quite heavy and some newborns have trouble keeping them in
    • A few newborn sleepers--we weren't expecting our little guy to come three weeks early, but he did so he was in NB clothes for the first three weeks

  • Loooove aden&anais blankets and burp cloths. Definitely would register for more packs than I did. If you are breast feeding Coddlelife bottles are amazing. Also love nap nanny, rock n play, wubba nub, footed zip pjs (love the children's place stretchies the best).

  • Moby Wrap

    BOB Revolution stroller

    Bumbo

  • I wish we had registered for a white noise machine and sleep sack swaddlers. We use both on a regular basis now, but didn't know before DS was born that we'd need them.
