PSA - credit card number stolen from mail

We just got a call from our bank this morning trying to verify several charges on a new credit card that we just got in the mail.  I hadn't activated the card yet, so that is what flagged the system - thank goodness!  When I opened the envelope after the call this morning, I could see the card number, expiration, and my name outlined through the paper, with the card still folded inside.  You could also sort of make out some of the numbers on the outside of the envelope.  We are guessing what happened is that some jacka$$ saw it while it was being processed in the mail and could tell that it was a credit card, so they made a rubbing of the card through the envelope to get all the numbers, etc. and then just put the whole thing back in the mail.  I don't know if I would have thought anything of it had I just opened the envelope before getting the call from fraud protection, but if you get a new card in the mail that looks like that, be extra watchful of your account.  Better yet, ask your bank or credit card company to ship it to you via UPS or FedEx so it will be protected in a better envelope and trackable.  Our bank (Chase) told us that they will do that for no charge if requested.

  • That sucks!  How were they able to activate the card?  Don't you have to verify info in order over the phone in order to use it?

  • NM, I get it now.  You activated the card and then they started using it.  Bastards.

Yeah, that's the idea.  I hadn't activated mine yet, which is the only reason our fraud protection caught it.  If I had activated it already, all of those charges would have gone through normally and then we would have had to go back and dispute them one by one after we caught it ourselves.

  • this happened to my dad a few years ago.

on another note, I had an amex card I only used for business travel - and there is no consistent pattern to where I go and what I use it for.  somehow they figured out a random walmart charge in arkansas was fraudulent. I'm super impressed at their detective skillz.

  • Bastards!  I'm glad they caught the charges.  Thanks for the PSA.
