Hi ladies,
I hope that you are all doing great with your new, beautiful babies. I am now 8 days overdue. At my last appointment I had made no progress. I am going back on Monday again. My doctor doesn't induce until two weeks past the due date (for me Nov. 7th). He said that 95% of woman will go into labor on their own in that two week window. Well, I am skepical that i will have any changes on Monday. My question is, if I continue all the way to next Friday what are my chances of the induction being successful? A friend of mine was two weeks past due and her ob/gyn wanted to schedule a c-section because she said that inductions are usually unsuccessful with people that late. I am really getting scared. I don't want a c-section, however, I also don't want a three day labor with a ton of interventions that ends in a c-section anyways. Not that I have been given a choice.
What was the experience on here if you were induced? Did most find it was horrible or not successful? I am sorry that this post is so long! Congrats on all of your new arrivals!
Re: Third Tri. Question about Inductions
I wasn't induced but wanted to say that sounds like BS that inductions will be unsuccessful that late. That doctor probably just wanted the "convenience" of a c-section.
And good luck! Here's hoping you go into labor on your own very soon!
I was induced, but I was also 5cm dilated and 80% effaced. So I was a very good candidate for it. It went off without a hitch.
If I were you (and this is just my opinion), I would wait. You are right that if you are induced and your body is not ready it is more likey to end in c-sect.
Also, just because you have made no progress doesn't mean you couldn't have that baby tonight! With my first I was 4 days overdue when I had my first non stress test. I remember the nurse in triage monitoring me and saying that I wasn't going to have my baby anytime soon. Well, I went into labor on my own that night. You never know!
my read shelf:
Hello...
I was induced but 3 weeks before my due date. (so I cant help you in regards to it not working well in overdue people). I can give you a perspective on my induction experience though. I was induced for severe preclampsia so I was on magnesium which made things harder for me (known to cause muscle weakness.) My OB used pitocin which caused quick but untimeable contractions for me. My body just wasnt ready. The combo of this resulted in my pushing for a little over 3 hours. I ended up needing an episiotomy (which I selected when given the option of that or vacuum extraction). Toward the end of labor, I was BEGGING for a c-section and one month later I still say that if I dont go into labor naturally next time, I will elect a c-section to not put my body or the baby through all that again. I know its a touch decision. Part of me really didnt want a c section because I wanted to experience it naturally. Being induced didnt allow me to experience it naturally either though. I do know of plenty of women with great induction stories though, some as simple as water breaking and body takes it from there! Good luck!!!!!!
I ended up being in labor for 30 hours and pushing for four hours before having a forceps delivery.
I understand why I needed to be induced, but I honestly believe that it is one of the reasons my labor was so long & hard. My body wasn't totally ready to give birth yet. I was in labor for about 15 hours with absolutely no progress (2 cm dilated).
Kinda like, just because they give you meds to start cx, doesn't mean the rest of the "parts" are ready to cooperate.
Just because my uterus was having cx, didn't mean my cervix was ready to dilate.
Does that make sense?
Give it the full two weeks. And if they suggest a C-section, ask why. I had several nurses tell us that most OBs would have done a C-section instead of the forceps delivery. No idea why.
Forceps delivery = not that bad.
I know how you feel with the whole induction thing...I was the same way. I had a scheduled induction for convenience reasons. I went in only 1cm dilated and 0% effaced. I had not progressed any in a week. I was hoping to get to the Hospital and be dilated and do labor on my own. I was scared! Like you, I didn't want to labor all day and then end up having a CS (that was the last thing I wanted!).
My doctor used cytotec, which can be given every 4 hrs to help soften your cervix. I had 2 doses of cytotec and was in labor for 18 hours. I pushed for 40 min. Thankfully the labor progressed and everything turned out good
Good luck to you!
I was induced for a different reason but here's my story. I was on modified bedrest for constant contractions so to avoid ptl, I was feet up. Well, I started spotting a bit in wk 36 and dr couldn't figure it out. My cerivix was closed, etc. So, the night she was on-call we decided to induce. I went in at 6 pm at night. I started hemoraging really bad (come to find out I had bleeding w/in the placenta) and my ob had to come in for an emergency c/s at 4 am. SO:
- Although I was experiencing some contractions that night, I didn't "labor"
- I had a spinal and reacted horrible. Vomitted all day and was downright sick. In hindsight, I think a epi would have been better but w/ emergency, you get an spinal.
- I wanted a vaginal birth but didn' do bad w/ my c/s. I recovered really well and aside from those first few days in the hospital, wasn't in that much pain.
I was induced at 38 weeks 5 days. I started with zero progess, labored for 22 hours and delivered vaginally. I consider it a success.
It is totally your choice. Good luck!
This is load of crap and not supported by evidence based research. ?Just remember that scheduled c-sections are easier and more lucrative for doctors, so you have to take such theories with a grain of salt. ?
I had my baby at 42 weeks 3 days by one count and 43 weeks by another. ?It was hard to wait for her (and to ignore the nay sayers who thought I was doing the wrong thing by waiting for my babe to come on her own), but also totally worth it. I personally wouldn't consent to an induction based on dates alone, but I know that I am in the minority.?
I would suggest instead of worrying for the next 6 days, you do everything naturally you can to encourage your babe to come along. ?See a chiropractor, get a prenatal massage, have sex, take lots of walks, eat spicy food, bounce on a yoga ball, etc. ? Also, try to relax. ?Stress can totally delay labor. ?
?I had my MW do an examine when I hit 42 weeks and I was hardly dilated or effaced, so I pretty much had no "progress" when my water broke with no warning (no contractions, bloody show, MP). ?Active labor started 5 minutes later and my babe was born naturally 40 hours later. ?
"Your babe will come on his/her birthday. ?No one is pregnant forever." ?This was my daily mantra in the end.

I had my induction scheduled for at 6.30am. I was 39 wks. I came into the hospital at 4cm & 75%-100% effaced. They started me on pitoson at 7.30am. From 7.30am to noon I stayed about the same dilation. My doctor came in at noon and broke my water. Within 20 seconds of breaking my water I started having major contractions. And within 20 minutes I had an epidural. The epidural didn't hurt at all. I was having extreme contractions however never felt them. It was great. I fell asleep for a couple of hours. When I woke I was feeling slight contractions and I asked the nurse what step was next. She indicated that I would feel pressure or they would see some changes on the screen. I was feeling pressure so she checked me. I was at 10cm! I started pushing around 3.15pm and at 4.15pm they paged my doctor to come in. He didn't return their pages so the nurses called his office. He had his pager OFF! That was sort of funny. He arrived about 4.35pm. He was huffing and puffing from running. I did one push and her head was out and the 2nd push she was born.
I have to say being induced was super easy for me. Thank god cuz my pregnancy was a not! Good luck to you!!
No, I wouldn't say that they are unsuccessful due to being later. I think inductions that lead to a c-section would have probably led to one either way natural or induced. Maybe more so with being induced.
I was induced at 39 wks and was only 50% effaced and fingertip dialated as I was for about 2 wks prior to that. I had a totally successful induction. The medicine to ripen my cervix totally put me into my own natural labor. I did need some pitocin eventually to speed the dialating up but once I got that I went from 2-8 cm in an hour and a half hour later I was pushing.
Don't worry..it will be fine.
