Parenting after 35

Baby Shower Amount

I realize that this varies substantially by person, individual finances, desire, etc.  But I'm going to a shower and wondering if I am being extravagant or cheap.  For someone you know but aren't terribly close with (think book club member or the like, but you don't hang out with outside that), how much do you spend on a shower gift?

Re: Baby Shower Amount

  • I would spend $25 - $35.

  • For a good friend, I'd spend around $50...maybe even more.  But for the type of relationship you mentioned, I'd probably go with $30 or so.

For office showers I typically spend about $20 (or go in on the group gift). For friend showers I spend about $50 and then for close family I spend about $100.

I'm with hocus.  Only I don't do group gifts anymore.. they get awkward when some people refuse to contribute yet you still think they did, etc.   Just don't like that.

  • I voted for $20-25...  If I'm not close, I wouldn't spend more. And you can do pretty well with clothes and toys at Target or Wal-Mart and get enough so it doesn't look skimpy.

For a good friend, I'd spend up to $50. All depends on my current finances.

  • I picked C so I guess I'm cheap. Embarrassed
  • $11-15, only bc you can get a really cute baby outfit for that money. If it was a close friend, $50 or so. And more for a relative, unless they've been cheap with my gifts in the past, lol ;)

  • I usually spend around $30 in the given situation, but have been known to whip up a hat out of scrap yarn, add a book, and wrap it in plain paper with cute handmade decorations, for a grand total of $10.00

Don't feel lonely, I'm with NewMrs07.  It may be because of our finance right now, but I'm really cautious on what we spend.  Actually, I do a lot of clearance shopping and have some cute things saved.  So I'd really be giving a more expensive gift, but at a lower price.
